Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 29, 1907.
Application filed March 21- 1906- Serial No. 307,234-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, CHARLES L. GOHMANN, a resident of New Albany, in the county of Floyd and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in stoves, and more particularly to stove-bases providing improved mounting for an improved grate, the object of the invention being to provide an improved stove-base composed of a cast-metal top plate secured upon a sheet-metal box or ash-pit and providing mounting for a swinging grate, which latter is composed of a single casting easily removed from the support and capable of being drawn forward to dump; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as
will be more fully hereinafter described, and
pointedout in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional view illustrating my improvements. Figs. 2 and 3 are top plan views showing the grate in different positions, and Fig. 4 is a view of the grate removed.
The base comprises a sheet-metal boX or ash-pit 1 with cast-metal plate 2 secured to the top thereof and having a cast facing 3 around theopen end of the ash-pit, providing mounting for a suitable door. Cast plate 2 is made with a central circular opening in which my improved grate 4 is mounted and com prises a single integral casting supported between its ends by side lugs 5 on plate 2. The grate is made with longitudinal slots 6, the central slot receiving a depending lug 7 at the forward side of plate 2, and the grate is supported at this forward side of the stove-base by a narrow horizontal platform 8 integral with the lower end of lug 7. On the rear end of grate 4 a lug 9 is located and projects below a flange 10 on plate 2 to prevent tilting of the grate when the grate is in its normal working position.
A Wide opening 11 is made in grate 4 near its forward or outer end, which opening communicates with the central slot 6, and when the grate 4 is pulled out to free its lug 9 from beneath iiange 10 the grate can be tilted and Will permit the removal of the grate from the platform when the grate is tilted, and by this construction it will be seen that a broken or damaged grate can be easily removed and replaced without in any way disturbing the other parts of the stove.
A prong 12 is provided at the forward or shaker, and it will be seen that the grate can be given a partial rotary or oscillatory motion to shake, or can be drawn forward to dump the contents into the ash-pit, or can be and it will further be seen that but a single integral casting is employed as a gratenvhich can be cheaply made and replaced at small cost and by any one of average intelligence.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described Without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Lettors Patent, is V 1. The combination of a base having an port mounted upon said. base and having a part extending over the open side of the base and a grate sustained by said grate-support.
2. The combination of a base open at its top and one side, a cast-metal grate-support mounted upon said base, and a grate sustained by said support and removable through. the open side of the base.
3. The combination with a stove-base having an opening in one side and also having an opening in its top, and inward1yprojecting lugs in said last-mentioned opening, of a grate comprising a single casting sup ported on said lugs, and means permitting the grate to be shaken, drawn outward, or entirely removed through the open side of the base.
4. The combination with a grate-support having inwardly-projecting lugs, of, a grate, comprising a single casting supported on the lugs, a depending lug on the support having removed fromplatform 8, as the opening 11 outer end of the grate to receive a suitablev open top and side, of a cast-metalgrate-sup entirely removed, at the will of the operator,
a platform at its lower end, a slot in the grate longitudinal slots in the grate and an opento receive the lug and support the grate 0n ing in the grate communicating with the centhe platform, an opening in the grate to pertral slot. mit the latter to be removed from the plat In testimony whereof I have signed this 15 5 form when the grate is drawn outward and specification in the presence of two subscribtilted, a flange on the support, and a lug on ing witnesses. the grate beneath the flange to prevent tilting of the grate in normal position.
CHARLES L. GOHMANN.
5. A removable rate for stoves, eornpris- Witnesses: 10 mg a single lntegral casting havlng a ing at JOSEPH BRUNS,
one end, a shaking-prong at its other end, PETER SoHMrTT.
