ful Improvements in Plate-Lifters; and I do i hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to culinary implements, and more particularly to plate-lifters, and has for its object to provide a device of this kind which will be extremely simple and cheap and which may be manufactured at a low figure. Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lifter engagedwith the plate. Fig. 2 is a bottomplan view of the device.

Referring now to the drawings, the present invention comprises a handle member 5 and a jaw member 6. The handle member consists of a metallic plate which is broadened at one end, the side edges of the broadened portion diverging from the handle 5 to the free ends of the broadened portion, and this broadened portion is bifurcated to form divergent fingers 7, which are curved downwardly throughout their entire length and which at their free ends are bent to form rearwardly-extending hooks 8. Just rearwardly of its bifurcation the handle member is bent to offset the handle 5 upwardly from the fingers 7, and between this bend (ind cated at 8) and the bifurcation there is a perforation 9, which registers with a perforation 10, formed in a plate 11, disposed against the under surface of the handle member and secured thereto by means of a rivet 12, engaged in the registering perforations.

The rearward end of the plate 11 carries a transversely-extending sleeve 13, which lies rearwardly of the bend 8, and the jaw member 6, which is V-shaped, has at'its minor end. a pair of sleeves 14, which lie at the opposite sides of the sleeve 13 for the reception therewith of a pivot-pin 15.

At its free edge the jaw member 6 is bifurl cated to form divergent fingers 16, which are 1 longitudinally curved and which have their extremities bent to form hooks 17, extending toward the plate 11.. The operation of the device may be clearly j seen in Fig. 1, and the fingers have some re- 1 silience to permit of the engagement thereof with plates which would otherwise be too large for engagement by the present lifter. j When the device is to be engaged with a plate of these proportions, the hooks of the fingers 16 are first engaged therewith, and the hooks of the fingers 7 then have their free end portions brought into engagement with the plate, the extremities of these hooks having a slight upward turn, and it will be seen that l downward pressure upon the lifter will then 1 cause the fingers 7 to straighten to some ex tent, thus allowing their hooks to slip beyond the edge of the plate.

It will be seen that the offsetting of the handle 5 permits the jaw member 6 to lie l with its forward portion in the plane of the plate 11 when at the upward limit of its movement, this movement being limited by the handle. What is claimed is- A lifter comprising a metallic handle having divergent downwardly-curved fingers at its forward end, said fingers having their free ends turned rearwardly to form hooks, the handle being bent rearwardly of the fingers to ofiset it above the fingers, a plate secured to the handle rearwardly of the fingers and extending beneath the offset portion of the j handle, and a jaw member hinged to the rearward portion of the plate, said jaw member including a pair of divergent downwardlycurved fingers having their free ends bent to form hooks directed toward the plate, said jaw member being arranged for engagement of the handle to limit its upward movement and to then lie with its foward portion in the j plane of the plate. 1 In testimony whereof I aifix my signature l in presence of two witnesses.
