Description
No. 841,622. PATENTED JAN. 15; 1907.
A. v. GASSAL. DUST PAN. APPLICATION FILED MAB- 3, 1906.
UNITED STA'ITES ARTHUR V. (JASSAL, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
DUST-PAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1907.
Application filed March 3,1906. Serial No. 304,027-
To all ur/mnt it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR V. citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dust-pans of the type embodying a dust receptacle or box having a movable closure, and has for its objects to produce a comparatively simple inexpensive device of this character which in practice may be readily opened and positioned for receiving the sweepings, one which may be conveniently transported from place to place, and one which when lifted for trans portation will be automatically closed to prevent escape of the dust or other contents of the receptacle.
lVith these and other objects in view the invention comprises the novel features of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dust-pan embodying the invention and showing the same in open position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 3 4 of Fig. 1, showing the receptacle closed and in position for transportation. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view, partly in section, showing the manner of slidably engaging the lid or closure with the dust-pan.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a box or receptacle comprising a top wall 2, bottom wall 3, and end walls 4, having their upper edges inclined forwardly and down wardly throughout a portion of their length, as at 5, there being formed upon and integral with the bottom 3 a forwardly-extending portion or apron 6, disposed at an appropriate downward inclination in cross-section to bring its outer edge flush with the surface on which the pan may rest.
and at a point adjacent the forwardv end of the latter is a substantially U-shaped rocking CASSAL, a
member or bail 7, presenting end portions or arms, and a normally horizontal portion extended longitudinally of the forward end of the box, there being formed integral with and at the longitudinal center of the bail an upwardly-extending handle 8, provided at its upper end with a handpiece or loop 9, it being noted in this connection that the parts 7, 8, and 9 are formed from a single length of wire suitably bent into shape and twisted in the formation of the handle 8, as illustrated in Fig. 1.
Hinged at its forward edge, as at 10, upon the horizontal portion of the bail 7 is a sheetmetal plate or slide 11, constituting a closure for the box and provided at its ends with offset engaging portions or fingers 12, engaged for travel beneath inturned guide-flanges 13, formed along the upper edges of the walls 4, as seen more clearly in Figs. 3 and 4, it being noted that the parts 12 and 13 form a means for slidably connecting the closure with the box.
In practice when the receptacle is positioned on the floor, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and the handle 8 turned vertically upward the bail 7 in swinging on its pivot will carry the slide 11 backward over the upper wall 2 to open position, the engaging portions 12 being adapted during the movement of the closure to travel beneath the guides 13.
After the dust and other sweepings have been swept into the receptacle the latter will be raised from the floor through the medium of the handle 8 and will when raised swing vertically downward on the bail to the position illustrated in Fig. 3, whereby the slide or closure 11 will be carried automatically to closed position, thus obviating accidental es cape of the contents of the receptacle during transportation.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is In a device of the class described, a box or receptacle open at its front and having its end walls provided at their upper edges with Pivoted at its ends in the walls 4 of the box longitudinal guideways and inclined downwardly and upwardly in advance of the latter, a movable closure for the box having opposite offset engaging portions seated in the and to close automatically when the box is guideways, and a handle provided with a lifted by the handle. 10 substantially U-shaped bail terminally piv- In testimony whereof I affix my signature oted in-the end Walls of the boX at a point in presence of two witnesses. adjacent its forward open end, said closure ARTHUR V. CASSAL. being pivoted at its forward edge on the bail Vitnesses:
