Description
w, w m W mw Tg5 NoRms PETERS co, wasumsforl, n. c.
State of North Carolina, have DAVID W. WI-IITAKER, OF OAK RIDGILNORTH CAROLINA.
BOTTLE-STOPPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1907.
Application filed August 3, 1906. Serial No. 329,024.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAviD W. WHITAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oak Ridge, in the county of Guilford and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to improvements in bottle Stoppers or valves. Its object is to provide for readily stoppering the bottlecontents, to obviate the necessity of removing the stopper when it may be desired. to pour out of said contents or empty the bottle, to control the pouring operation as may be required, and to accomplish these ends in a simple, eXpeditous, and effective manner.
Said invention consists of certain features of a structural character substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and specifically pointed out by the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure l is a sectional elevation thereof. Figs. 2 and 3 are disassembled views of the two parts of the invention.
In carrying out my invention I provide a preferably downward tapered or funnelshaped receptacle or chamber 1, having a tubular extension or nozzle 2- practically inserted in the bottle-neck liquid-tight. Said tubular extension or nozzle has opposed apertures or orifices 3 in its upper end just above or outside of the bottle-neck, and with these orifices or apertures communicate two pouring-spouts L 5, one of which openings in connection with one spout serving as a vent, while the other orifice or aperture and spout are being used through which to pour or discharge the bottle contents, as will be readily appreciated. A plug or valve proper, 6, also tubular, but having an upper closed end and having suitably fixed thereto, as by a narrow plate-like shank portion 7 or otherwise, a cap or cover member 8 fits within the nozzle or tubular extension 2, while said closure or cover member fits u on and closes the funnel member l. Said p ug has three orifices or ports 7 8' 9 opening laterally therethrough, one, 9, being much the smallest or diminutive, the larger alining two beingV adapted by suitable grasping and turning the cover or closure 8 to simultaneously registeror coincide with the orifices 4 5 of the nozzle 2, as when it may be desired to pour or discharge the bottle contents in the usual way. When, however, it may be required to discharge any portion of the bottle-contents drop by dro the diminutive orificeor port 9 is broug t into register or coincidence with either of the two orifices 4 5 for that purpose by in like manner suitably grasping and turning the cover 8. In order to expedite or aid the operator in locating the points of registration between'the ports of the valve or plug` and the orifices of the tubular extension of the funnel, suitable indicia or marks suggestive thereof may be scribed or marked upon the cover or closure 8, which will be readily appreciated in opening and closing communication between said orifices or ports.
It is noted that by means of the aforesaid construction and arrangement of parts the bottle contents when being poured or discharged will be prevented from entering the funnel member of the stopper, which would, if permitted, be liable to escape from the same to the outside, which of course is to be avoided.
Also it is noted that the use of the funnel member provides for the ready pouring into the bottle of any liquid with which it may be desired to fill it without liability of spilling said liquid, as would otherwise be the case.
I claiml. A device of the character described, comprising a closure for a bottle including a funnel' member having a tubular extension provided with opposed orifices and with pouring-spouts arranged in communication with said orifices, one of said orifices and one of said spouts serving as a vent, and an upper end closed tubular plug fitted to said tubular extension and provided with opposed orifices or ports effective for registration with the aforesaid orifices.
, 95 2. A device of the character described,
plug provided with ports or orifices one being Imuch the smallest or diminutive, two being registrable synchronously with the aforesaid orifices, and said diminutive port being adapted to register with either of the aforesaid oriiices separately.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a closure for a bottle, including a funnel member having a tubular extension IOC IIC
provided with o posed orifices or ports, and In testimony whereof I have signed my an upper end c osed tubular plug itted to name to this specification in the presence of Io said tubular extension and provided With oritwo subscribing Witnesses.
iices or ports effective for registration With DAVID W WHITAKER the aforesaid orifices or ports, sald plug having its shank portion rovided With a cover adapted to form a c osure for said funnel member.
