Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 8, 1907.
Application filed August 13, 1906. Serial No. 330,310.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL SODA, a citizen ofhthe United States, residing at New York city, Manhattan borough, county and State i of New York, have. invented certain new and useful 'Improvements in Foldable Counters, of which the following is a clear,` full, and exact description.
This invention relates to counters or tables such as are usedfor displaying goods, the object being to produce a counter or table of simple and inexpensive construction which can be folded and stored away, if desirable, in small compass.
'Io these and other ends, which will hereinafter appear, my invention comprises the novel features of improvement and combination and arrangement of parts which I will now proceed to describe and finally claim, reference being had to the accom anying drawings, forming part of this speci cation, wherein- Figure 1 illustrates a perspective view of a table or counter embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section thereof, the legs being broken away. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal central section thereof when folded and Fig. 4 is a cross-section thereof, the section being taken on the line a ain Fig. 3.
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the top or upper shelf of my improved counter, while 2 indicates the lower shelf, (see Fig. 2,) said shelf 2 having beveled /Side edges 2a, Fig. 4. To the upper shelf 1 preferably hinged to said up er shelf, as at 7,
8, and 9, Fig. 2, the said rac -boards having beveled top ed es 6a to correspond to the beveled edges o the shelf 2. The said end frames 3 and 4 are provided with crossbraces 10 and 11, respectively, which are in turn provided with recesses 12, 13, and 14, adapted to receive the-ends of the members or slats 15, 16, and 17, which comprise'A the lower shelf 2. Suitable braces 18 and 19 are employed to hold the said members 15, 16,` and 17 together. The top shelf 1 and the lowershelf 2 are provided with openings 20 21 and 22 23, respectively, through which the locking-pins24 25 in theend frames 3 and 4 are adapted to pass. In this instance the locking-pins are carried by the crossbraces 10 and 11 and are pivotally mounted therein, so that they can be turned after having been inserted through the aforesaid openings 2O 21 and 22 23.
When the counter is folded, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4', the lower shelf 2 will rest flat upon the upper shelf 1, as will also the rackboard 6. The endframes3and4willbefolded up and contact the under side of the upper shelf 1. The locking-pins 24 and 25 will now have passed through the said openin s 2O 21 and 22 23 and after having passe theref through are turned so that the horns 26 thereof will lie over the lower shelf 2, as shown in Fig. 4, so as to retain the same against premature displacement.
To use or set up the counter or table, the pins 24 and 25 are turned so as to allow the lower shelf 2 to be lifted 0H, the end frames being then swung outwardly and the ends of the members 15, 16, and 17 of shelf 2 placed in the recesses 12, 13, and 14, as shown in Fig. 2, which will act to keep said end frames a art to maintain the structure in rigid upright position.
The beveled edges 2f;l of the shelf 2 and the beveled edges 6a of the rack-boards 6 act to retain the rack-boards 6 when the table Or counter is closed. As said beveled edges 2a Of the shelf 2 overlap the beveled edges 6a of the rack-boards 6 the said rack-boards are prevented from opening prematurely.
Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A foldable counter or table, comprising a top shelf, foldable end members hinged thereto, a detachable lower shelf having beveled side edges carried by said end members,
to overlap the beveled edges of said rackboards when said table is folded, and a locking'device to secure said detachable shelf to the top shelf of said. counter or table when said counter or table is folded.
2. A foldable counter or table comprising a top shelf having a plurality of openings therein, foldable rack-boards pivotally connected .to said top shelf, end members pivotally attached to said top shelf, a lower shelf detachably secured to said end members provided with a plurality of openings adapted to aline with the openings in said top shelf, a locking device carried by said end members adapted to pass through the openings in said top shelf and said lower shelf, and lock same when said table is folded and said openings are in alinement.
3. A foldable counter or table, comprising a top shelf having a plurality of openings therein, foldable rack-boards, having beveled top edges, pivotally attached to said top shelf, foldable end members pivotally attached to said top shelf, a detachable lower shelf, carried by said end members, provided with a plurality of openings adapted to aline with the openings in said top shelf, said lower shelf having beveled side edges; a locking device carried by said end members adapted to pass through the said openings in the top and lower shelf and lock said shelves together when said table or counter is folded and said openings are in alinenient, the beveled edges of said lower shelf being adapted to overlap the beveled edges of said rack-boards to prevent said rack-boards from opening.
4. A foldable counter or table, comprising a top shelf having a plurality of openings therein, foldable rack-boards carried thereby, foldable end members pivotally attached to said top shelf, a lower shelf detachably secured to said end members provided with a plurality of openings adapted to aline with the openings in said top shelf, pivotal lock ing means carried by said end members adapted to pass through the openings in said top and lower shelves when said table is folded, and means carried. by said top shellI adapted. to hold said rack-boards closed, independently of said looking means.
5. A foldable counter or table, comprising a top shelf provided with a plurality of openings, foldable end members pivotally at tached thereto, a cross-brace, carried by said end members, provided with. a plurality of recesses, a lower shelf compiising a pluralityof slats adapted to enter said recesses, whereby said end members are braced, said lower shelf being provided with a plurality of openings adapted to aline with the openings in said top shelf, pivotal locking-pins carried by said end members adapted to pass through the openings in said shelves when saidtable is folded, and means independent of said locking-pins adapted to hold said raclvboards closed.
Signed at New York city, New York, this 10th day of August, 1906.
