' Hoese ssusi-i. I l I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 1, 1907.
Application filed January 29,1906. Serial No. 298.515. I
and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse- Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to grooming imple- 1o ments, being designed most particularly to {will be of oblo'n for provide a brush of novel specific structure comprising a back,- teeth, and retainer of .novel formation, the retainer constituting a closure to receive the hand and protect the same, and said retainer being contracted at the entrance to fit more closely about the wrist. For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowiedge of the details of construction of the means for effecting the result reference is to be had'to the following description and accom anying df awings.
W e the in ,ention may be adapted to different forms ,and conditions by changes in the/structure and minor details Without departin from the spirit or essential features thereof, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in whichj Figure l is a perspective view of a brush embodying the invention. .Fig. 2 isa vertical central longitudinal section of the brush. Fi .3 is acentral vertical transverse section of t e brush.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the followin description and indicated in all-the' views 0 the drawings by the same reference characters.
As stated, the brush comprising the back 1, teeth 2, and retainer 3, is a one-piece structure and is preferably formed of rubber molded or otherwise formed into the.,desired shape. The teeth 2 are tapered and project from the face of the back and may be of any "length and number. The back 1 maybe of any shape and size, dependin upon the special use for which the brush 18 designed. In the most general: construction the brush in, with the result that a the retainer 3 wi l ha've thedesired sha e imparted, the open end being contracte to fit about the wrist Without leaving a too great space forthe entrance of dust or otherfforeign matter.
The retainer 3 has its middle portion spaced from the back 1 and is connected at its edges thereto, so as to provide'a housin to completely encompass the hand and afl'or protection therefor. The edge portions of the retainer at their juncture of the back 1 are made thicker than the remaining portion and gradually taper in thickness as they recede from their juncture with the back, leaving the center portion comparatively thin and flexible, so as to yield slightly when a large hand is thrust into the retainer. The thickened edge portions of the retainer provide ample protection against injury and resist wearincident to the striking of the edge portion of the retainer against any part of the stall or other object.
While it is preferred to have the retainer spring from the outer ed e of the back, it is to be understood that t is arrangement is not essential and will de end in a great measure upon the outline o the brush-back, the purpose being to have the receiving or open end of the retainer somewhat contracted, so as to conform to and fit closely about the Wrist when the hand is thrust into the retainer.
The open end of the retainer 3 is formed in a peculiar manner. Said retainer in order to provide theopen or entrance portion is substantial than would otherwise be the case.-
Furthermore, the manner of cutting the entrance-opening of the retainer 3 on an incline permits of the contraction of the mouth of the opening at-opposite sides of the wrist I as well as iving plenty of room for the wrist when the rush 1s being operated at a right angle approximately to the line of the fore arm.
Having thus described the invention, what 1s clalmed as new 1s A new rubber article of manufacture com-g, prising a brush consisting of a back having a plurality of integral tapering teeth projecting from its face, and provided With-e re 1 the closed end thereof, whereby the er'itrenoetamer for the bend extending from the rear opening is formed with a, contracted mouth side of said ba'ck andintegml therewith, said i and, is adapted to permit of free play of the retainer being adapted to completely house wrist in manipulating the brush.
5 the hand and havin its edge portions thick- I In testimony whereof I flix my signature 15 ened at the point 0 jointure with the back 1 in presence of two Witnesses.
for the purpose specified, the retainer being. JOHN S. HIOKSQN. [1,. s.] further provided with an entrance-opening i Witnesses: or receiving end formed by cutting a portion f FRED M. HIOKSON;
