Description

PATENTED JAN. 1, 1907.
E. NOOTBAAR.
HOLDER FOR EXPANDED UMBRELL APPLICATION FILED MAR. 21. 1906.
1- UNITED s'rArEs ea oFF oE. 7 Enusi oorBA n, or BERL N, GERMANY;
HOLDER FOR'EXPANDED UMBRELLAS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 21,1906. Serial No. 307,282.
n0. smear. Patented Jan. 1, 1907.
To all whom/ it ma concern." scribed in connection with another joint in Be it known that I, ERNST NOOTBAAR, a the supporting member. citizen of the Empire of Germany,residing in- A rod f enters the upper open end of the Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new tubular member (2 and is adjustable longitu- 5 and useful Improvements in Holders for EX dinally to said member by means of a thumb- 6o panded Umbrellas, of which the following is screw g, which is guided in a longitudinal a specification. e groove hin the rodf. The rod f has attached This invention aims to provide adevice for at its upper end a comparatively short arm 'i, holding expanded umbrellas, which device said parts being angularly. adjustable by 10 may be applied to a carriage, automobile, a .means of a thumb-nut 7c. The upper end chair, or to any suitable support and readily portion of the rod f and the cooperating so adjusted as to hold the umbrella in proper end '1'. of the arm i are perforated and proposition toprotect the user against the sun or vided with cooperating serrations or teeth on rain, as the case may be, whereby the hands their adjacent faces, by which said parts, in
15. of the user are'left entirely free. connection with the screw-post 7c and the 70 :With this object in view the invention conthumb-nut k, are firmly held in position when sistscin the novel features and combinations once-adjusted. A helical spring Z, confined of parts to'be hereinafter "described and in facing sockets or'cavities in theparts f 'and v claimed. I I i, tends.to normally separate said members,
In the accompanying drawings, in which and consequently to disengage their serra- 75 the same parts are denoted by the same refertions, whereby whenever the thumb-nut 7c is ence characters throughout the several released said parts ma'y be readily adjusted at views, Figure lisa perspective view of an any desired angle toward each other. The
u'mbrellaholder constructed in accordance. upper portion or head of the arm i is provided 2 5 with the invention, such holder being shown with a concave; socket, as shown in Fig. 2, and '80 as supporting an umbrella. Fig. 2 is an enthe ball-shaped end m of a rod 11. is ad'ustably 'larged detailielevation, partly in section, of. ted in said socket by means of a t eaded --the umbrella-clamping .member and its adring 0, provided' with adjusting-arms, as junctive part -Fig.3is'a horizontal-section shown. By the ball-and-socket joint thus on line 3 3",Fig'.12; and-Fig. 4-is a detail secformed'the member 1:. may be adjusted to any 85 tion showing one of theja justable joints of angle with respect to the arm i, as will be un-. the: supporting member.} derstood. The upper portion of the member Referring to the drawings, a. denotes a n constitutes a pintle for a hinged clamp p, clamping member adapted for application to said clamp being held on said member by Y the seat of a vehicle, back of a chair, or"other means of a screw-nut n, as shown in Figs. 1 9o suitable support, said clamp embbdying a -and 2. The clamp p consists of two hinged threaded adjusting-screw b,cooperating with jaws which are normally held apart by a a fixed U-shaped .jaw c. The head 'of the spring p but which may beclamped about clamping-screw his preferably padded, so as the handle of an umbrella by means of a 4.0 toprevent moving orinjury of the part to screw-bolt g and thumb-nut q, as shown in 5 which-it is applied. Attached to the sideof Fig. 3. The inner faces of the jaws constitutthe clamp a. is an umbrella-supporting mem- 'ing the clamp p are preferably lined with ber having a lower tubular portion (1, which leather or padded at the points at which they may be adjusted 'angularly with respect to are placed in contact with theumbrella-han- 4 5 the clamp a by means of a stationary portion dle. v
e, having a serrated face, amovable portion In operation the clamp a is secured to the e, havinga' serrated face adjacent to the face seat or other supporting object by means of of the stationary portion e, and a thumb-nut its adjustable clamping-screw b. The tubu e screwing on a threaded post a For 'lar memberd, in which the rod or extension 1' 3o maintaining the parts d and a in theirfadtelescopes, may then be adjusted by means of 1 5 justed position the cooperating serrationspor the serrated portions and the thumb-nut e to teeth are provided, and in order tosecurethe the desired angle with respect to said clamp. disengagement of said teeth when the thumb- The height of the umbrella is determined by nut' e is released a helical spring acts upon the positionof the rod f in the tubular mem- 5 5 said members in a manner to be'presently deber d, the former being clamped in the desired 1 1 ed by the provision umbrella in any desired position, by the object position by the thumb-screw g. A still further adjustment in angular direction is afl'ordof the angularly-adjustable arm e, and the member n may' be adjusted at any desired means of the ball-and-so'cket joint. In addition tothese adjustments the handle of the umbrella itself may be clamped in different positions in the clamp 19.
By the di er ent adjustmentsdescribed the improved holder can be adjusted to hold the as required, to which the holder is attached. The device is comparatively simple and ineX- pensive in construction and extremely convenient in use, the adjustments being readily made and the parts when adjusted permanently maintaining their relative positi ns.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l A device for holding an expanded umbrella,
angle to the part 'i by I comprising a clamp;
tached thereto andangularly'adjustable with respect to the same,-a rod telescoping in said member and provided at its outer end with a serrated portion or face and a socket, a clampcarrying arm having at its inner end a serrated portion engaging'said first-named serrated portion and a socket :facing said. first-named vsocket, a pin pivoting said arm'and said rod and passing throu h said -sockets,oa spring confined-Witlnn anfb'etwee'n said sockets and normally separating said arm and said rod, and a clamping thumb-nut threaded on said pin. 4
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as -my invention I have s'gned presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ERNST NOOTBAAR. Witnesses: i l PAUL GOEPEL, l I HENRY J. S'UHRBIER.
