INK-ERASER.

To all whom, t may concer-71,:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Homestead, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ink- Erasers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the in'- vention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in ink-erasers.

The object of the invention is to provide an ink-eraser havin means whereby the saine may be securey attached to a penholder.

With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, andarrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of an ink-eraser constructed in accordance with the invention, showing the same applied, to a penholder. Fig. 2 is a similar view taken at right angles to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectiona view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side view of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a similar view of another modified form. Fig. 6 is a similar view of still another form of the invention, and Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the inner end of the form shown in Fig. 6.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 denotes the eraser, on the outer end of. which is formed a suitably-shaped blade 2, having a sharpened edge 3. Formed integrally with the blade 2 is a socket portion 4, said socket bein provided with one or more V-shaped note es or recesses 5, whereby the walls of said socket will be more or less yielding, thus facilitating the engagement of the same withthe outer end of the penholder. One edgev of the slot 5 is bent inwardly to form a flange or rib 6, which when the eraser is placed upon the end of the penholder will be forced into the same, thereby preventing the turning of the socket on the penholder when the eraser is being used.

The socket portion of the eraser may be 'of any suitable sha e to t various forms of penholders, said soc ets being shown in the above-mentioned figures as being conically shaped.

In Fig. 4 of the drawings is shown a modified form of eraser. In this instance the socket portion is substantially straight, and in one side of the same is formed a series of short studs 9, over which a clamping-band 10 is moved to force the walls of the socket into engagement with the penholder. Said band 10 has formed therein one or more a ertures, which'are adapted to be broug t 'into alinement with one or more of the studs 9 when the band is in place, thereby holding the same against slipping and releasing the socket.

In Fig. 5 is shown another modified form of the eraser. The'socket isishown in this instance as adapted to be engaged and held u on the penholder without the use of a c amping-band, the walls of the socket poshold they eraser in fight -frlctional engagement with the holder.

In Figs. 6 and 7 is shown a form of eraser similar to that shown in Fig. 5, the latter form, however, being provided with two V- shaped slots 5', arranged in opposite sides of the socket, one wall of each of said slots being turned inwardly to form a locking rib or flange 6 to engage the enholder.

By providing an in -eraser having an at- 'taching socket or device such as herein shown and described the same may be quickly applied to a penholder and will always be in p0- siti'on for use, serving the same purpose for a penholder that a rubber eraser does for a pencil. The blade 2 may be constructed so as to be employed for the same uses that an ordinary steel eraser is employed and will be found useful for opening envelops, cutting paper, or shar ening pencils.

From the oregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation'.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-

1. An ink-eraser ofthe character described comprising a blade, an integrally formed socket, said socket having a longitudinal slot formed therein, a clamping-band arranged o'n `said socket to force the walls of the same into tight engagement with a penholder, and means to hold said clamping-band in place.

2. An ink-eraser of the character described 15 comprising a blade, an integrally-formed socket-section, said section lhaving a longitudinal slot, an upwardlyturned flange formed on one edge of said slot, and means to hold said socket in tight engagement with the zo penholder, substantially as described.
