Be it known that we, FRANZ BURGER and HENRY M. WILLIAMS, citizens of the United States, residing at Fort Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Semispherical Superheating-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to superheatingboilers, and has for its object to provide improved and simplified means whereby steam may be economically and practicably superheated and to these ends our invention consists in the various features of construction and arrangement of parts combined and cooperating together to accomplish the ur poses and produce the results substantially as hereinafter more particularly set forth.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein we have illustrated a preferred embodiment of our present invention, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a semispherical superheating-boiler. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line a b, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 0 d, Fig. 2, parts being broken away; and Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line cf, Fig. 2.
One of the main objects of our invention is to provide a superheating-boiler in a compact and practicable form, wherein the heat may be utilized to the best advantage for the purposes intended, and while the shape or contour of the apparatus may be varied we have chosen to illustrate it as embodied in a semispherical superheating-boiler.
We will now describe the general features of construction and arrangement of parts of this embodiment of the invention in such manner that those skilled in the art can make use of the general features of our invention, it being understood that it is not limited to the precise details shown and specifically described.
Generally speaking, the superheatingboiler comprises a boiler proper, which incloses a fire-box or furnace, and preferably one of the general character of that shown, and the boiler is surrounded and practically inclosed by the superheater. This superheater is made up ofsections which may be of any desired number and of a contour to form the desired construction of superheater, and the parts are suitably connected together so as to cooperate together in the manner substantially as hereinafter described.
The boiler shown herein is in the general shape of a semispherical dome united to a lower cylindrical shell, and, as shown, it comprises the upper dome-shaped wall 1, the inner dome-shaped shell 2, and the cylindrical body portions 3 4, and these walls are united in any suitable way, as by the mud-ring 5, making thereby a semispherical dome-shaped boiler having a similarly-shaped fire-box in the interior thereof. The boiler and other parts are shown as suitably mounted on a base or furnace plate 6, to which the mudring 5 may be suitably connected, as by screws 7, and the lower portion of the mudring is preferably cut away at intervals to form ports or assages for the products of combustion or eat from the furnace, as will hereinafter be described.
The superheater shown comprises a number of courses of plates, the lower course in the present instance being mounted upon the base 6 and. the other courses mounted in order upon the lower course, and in the present instance the upper course is made up of curved sections or segments. In fact, all the courses are made up of sections, as 9, 10, 11, and 12-, each course in the present instance comprisingfour sections or segments; but of course this number may be varied according to the requirements of any particular case. Each section or segment consists of cast metal inclosing or embracing a plurality of Wrought-metal tubes 13, and the ends of these tubes are provided with proper headers 14, which headers are also provided with suitable inlets 15 and outlets 16. In making the sections or segments the tubes 13, which of course are curved in the proper form, and the headers 14 are suitably placed in the mold and the cast metal run around them, so
that the completed segments comprise series of wrought-iron segmental tubes and headers properly connected together, with suitable inlet and outlet tubes embedded in the cast metal. These various segments or sections can be properly united together in any suit- IOO able way, as by bolts 17, engaging ribs 18 on the adjacent edges of the sections. Connected with the upper course or dome-shaped portion is a central outlet or chimney 19 for the products of combustion.
Connected to the dome-shaped boiler is a suitable collector for the steam, shown in the form of a circular pipe 20, connected to the dome of the boiler by nipples 21, and extending from this circular collector are a number of pipes 22, which are shown as passing through the dome-shaped segments and as being connected with the various inlets 15 of the segments, so that steam from the central collector passes to the sections of the superheater and into the headers at one end of each section, thence through the pipes to the headers in the other end of the section, thence through the outlets 16 into suitable collecting-pipes 23, and thence the superheated steam is delivered into a proper receptacle, shown in the present instance in the form of a circular pipe 24, having a proper delivery 25 for the superheated steam. Sometimes it is preferable to make the connections between the collector 20 and the headers and pipes of the superheater inside the superheater, and this is indicated in the section, Fig. 3.
From this construction it will be seen that the superheater is made up of segments of proper shape and containing embedded pipes and headers and that these can be readily assembled and connected together and embrace or inclose the boiler, and in case of necessity the portions of the superheater can readily be detached to allow access to any part for repairs or otherwise.
While any desired and proper furnace can be used in connection with. our improved superheating-boiler, we have shown, but do not herein specifically claim, a form which is especially adapted for use in this connection, and this furnace will form the subject of a separate application. This furnace is included in the dome-shaped fire-box within the confines of the boiler and comprises a dome-shaped wall 30, having its crown cut away, as at 31, and provided with a deflecting crown-shaped cover 32, which may be suitably supported on brackets 33 or otherwise withinthe furnace. This dome-shaped furnace conforms generally to the domeshaped fire-box of the boiler, as shown. It is preferably provided with an annular grate 34, supplied with means for central feeding, shown in the form of a fuel-feeding tube 35, and below the furnace is a suitable ash-receptacle 36. This arrangement provides a smoke-consuming furnace within the boiler and furnishes an intense heat, so that the walls of the furnace become intensely hot, even to incandescence, and the products of combustion and heat pass up out of the dome portion of the furnace, as indicated by arrows, down between the outer wall of the furnace and the inner wall 4 of the boiler, through the openings 8 in the mud-ring and up around the outside wall 3 of the boiler and within the walls of the superheater, and thence through the chimney 19. In this way practically all the heat generated in the furnace is utilized and is properly distributed throughout all parts of the boiler and superheater, and the whole arrangement constltutes an exceedingly simple, compact, a nd practicable apparatus for the purpose intended.
The apparatus is capable of being used with a forced-air blast in connection with the furnace, and the intense heat produced thereby is partially taken up by the walls of the furnace, and the heated products of combustion passing between the walls of the furnace and boiler are practically regenerated and thence pass between the outer wall of the boiler and the superheater and supply the necessary heat thereto, so that practically all of the heat is utilized.
What We claim is 1. A semispherical superheater comprising a plurality of segmental sections of cast metal with wrought-metal tubes embedded therein, substantially as described.
2. A semispherical superheater comprising a plurality of segmental sections of cast metal with curved tubes and headers embedded therein, and having inlet and outlet connections with the headers, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a dome-shaped boiler having an internal fire-box, of a superheater embracing the boiler and providing a passage for the products of combustion from the fire-box between the outside of the boiler and the inside of the superheater.
4. The combination with a dome-shaped boiler having an internal fire-box, ofa domeshaped furnace within the fire-box and a dome-shaped superheater surrounding the boiler, whereby the products of combustion from the furnace pass through passages between the furnace and inner wall of the boiler and thence between the outer wall of the boiler and inner wall of the superheater, substantially as described.
5. The combination with a semisphericalshaped boiler having a mud-ring provided with openings, of a furnace within the boiler, a semispherical-shaped superheater-surrounding the boiler, and a collector above the boiler within the superheater, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a semisphericalshaped boiler having a similar fire-box, of a semispherical-shaped furnace within the fire-box, a semispherical-shaped superheater comprising sections containing tubes, a
