TELEPHONE CALL INDEX.
APPLICATION FILED JANJCZ. 1902 HARRY DOTY, OF EAST ORANGE, NEW JERSEY.
TELEPHONE CALL-INDEX.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
\ 7 Application filed January 22,1902. Serial No. 90,817.
To a, whorw it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY Dorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, Essex county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Telephone Call Indexes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to telephone indexes or cards containing the numbers and names of telephone subscribers; and it consists of a suitable structure of this character applied directly to the telephone-transmitter, Whereby a series of subscribers numbers required for constant use are disposed at a point most convenient to the user of the telephone.
My invention is fully illustrated the accompanying drawings, in which i Figure 1 is a front elevation of a telephonetransmitter containing an index-card made and disposed in accordance with my invention, the mouthpiece of the transmitter being shown in'section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the telephone-index struc-" ture, taken .on the line a, a, Fig. 1,-andjFig. 4
1s a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a modified structure, embodying my invention.
Telephone-transmitters are usually provided with number-plates which, as shown in the drawings, are located directly below the mouthpiecefand I arrange my improved index in such'a way that said number plate will not hide any same. i a
In the accompanying drawings, 1-represents the mouthpiece of the telephone-transmitter; 2, the casing containing the diaphragm; 3, a rotatable disk card fitting around an annular projection or shoulder 4, carried by the faceof the diaphragm-casing and free to turn thereon, and 5 a disk card which fits against said projection or shoulder 4 and is held in fixed position with relation thereto by the mouthpiece 1, the latterbeing temporarily removed in order to fit both or said cards in place. The fixed card 5 is provided with a radial opening 6, through which may be viewed the names of telephone subscribers contained onthe under card 3, the niimbers of which are displayed on the marginal edge of said card 3. I This movable disk card may contain quite a series of telephone-numbers and names divided into sections whichwill contain certain portions of the alphabet, and all of such names may be successively viewed of the material part of the.
through the radial opening of the fixed disk card by turning the movable disk card to the desired positions.
The fixed card may contain any desirable advertising matter. For instance, my device is intended as an advertising novelty, the fixed card to contain the name and telephone-number of a distributer who employs the device solely for advertising purposes, While the movable card contains blank spaces to receive other telephone-numbers with the names of subscribers most frequently called by the user.
In Figs. 2 and 3 I have shown in side and sectional, elevation, respectively, the position of the fixed'and. movable diskswith relation to the mouthpiece and diaphragmcasing of the telephone.
The disposition of the radial opening in the fixed card is not arbitrary, as it may be formed at the left hand side of the card, as illustrated at 6 in Fig. 4, instead of the right-hand side, as shown in Fig. 1. When arranged at the left-hand side of the fixed card, the position of the reference matter on the movable card will be reversedthat is to say, themargin of such card will contain the names of subscribers, while the numbers Will show through the opening 6. In Fig. 1 of the-drawings the end or the opening 6 is closed 'by a portion 7 of the fixed card 5; but
in some instances this end may be left open,
as shown in Fig. 4.
" Having thus described my invention, I
claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- '1. In a telephone call index or directory, the combination with the telephone transmitterand mouthpiece, of a circular card of stiff material having a central aperture fit- .ting around the neck of the telephone-mouthpiece and disposed between said telephone-- mouthpiece and the face of the transmitter,
said card extending beyond the surface of the transmitter and being free to rotate with respect to the transmitter.
2. In a telephone call index or directory, the combination with the telephone transmitter and mouthpiece, of a circular card of stiff material having a central aperture fitting around the neck of the telephone-mouthpiece and secured between said telephonemouthpiece and the face of the transmitter and a supplementary card underlying the fixed card and projecting beyondthe edge of the same, said supplementary card having a Patented. Dec.25 ,1906.
- mitter, said plate extending beyond the sur-- face of the transmitter, substantiallyas described.
4. In a telephone call index or directory, the combination with the telephone transmitter and mouthpiece, of a circular'card of stiff material having a circular aperture*fit-' ting around the neck of the telephone-mouthpiece .and secured between said telephonemouthpiece and theface' of the transmitter,
said card extending beyond the surface of the transmitter.
5. In a number and name card for telephones and in combination with the instrument proper, a front card having openings therein, and a second card carrying a series of subscribers numbers thereon arranged to be exposed to view through one of the openings in said'frontcard and located against the instrument proper, said second card being held against removalby the front card and the latter being clamped between the instru- -ment and the .mouthpieceof the transmitter.
' 6. In combination with a telephone-transmitter and its mouthpiece, a'card through which the mouthpiece-is passed,-and a sec- -ond card having indicating matter thereon,.
said second card being maintained by the first card about the mouthpiece and in front of the face plate of the transmitter 7. The combination of a telephone-transmitter, a fixedcard carried thereby and having an opening, and a movable disk card also carried by said transmitter and having matter to be viewed through the opening of the fixed card, said movable card extending beyond the'surface of the transmitter.
8. The combination of a telephone-trairsmitter, a fixed card carried thereby and having a radia opening, and a movable disk .card also carried 'by' said transmitter and having matter to be viewed through the radial openin of the fixed card, said movable card exten 'ng beyond .the Surface f th transmitter.
9. Thecombination of a telephone-trans-' I 6o mitter, a fixed cardcarried thereby and hav; ing an opening, and a movable card also carhaving matter disposed at the periphery-of ried by the transmitter and disposed beneath the fixed card, said movable card being of greater diameter than the fixed card and the same to be readin-connection with the matteron said movable oard viewed through the opening of the fixed card, said movable-v transmitter. In testimony card extending beyondthe surface of the" whereof I have signedgmy.
