TED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROD-ADJUSTER FOR PUMPING-WELLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Application filed May 28,1906. Serial No. 319,039.
To (all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN A. STOOPS, of Fenelton, Butler county, Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Rod-Adjuster for Pumping-Wells, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accom anying drawings, forming part of this speci 'cation, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 an end view, of a rod adjustment embodying my invention.
My invention has relation to means for ad justing the polished rods of oil and other deep wells, and is designed to provide means whereby an accurate adjustment may be given the rod for the purpose of adjusting the valves at their proper relative positions.
With this object in view my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, all substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings the numeral 2 designates the usual polished rod, to the lower end of which the sucker-rod is connected.
3 is a head having an aperture therethrough for the rod 2 and carrying the lateral trunnions 4, by means of which the head is j ournaled to the usual walking-beam of the pumping machinery. Extending upwardly from the head 3 is an elongated sleeve 5, having therein a vertical slot 6 to receive a pin 7, secured in the rod 2. The slot is formed at intervals on opposite sides with the offset recesses 8 to receive the pin 7. These recesses are properly located and spaced to provide for the necessary adjustments, which may be marked or indicated on the sleeve in any suitable manner. 9 indicates setscrews by means of which the desired adjustment is fixed.
The manner of using the device will be readily understood, the rod 2 being moved to bring the pin 7 in the proper recesses 8 and the set-screws 9 then tightened to fix the adjustment.
The aperture 10 in the head 3 is made somewhat larger than the rod in order to pretails of construction and arrangement by those skilled in the art without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
What I claim is 1. In a rod-adjuster, a head having an upwardly-extending slotted sleeve provided with offset recesses, and a rod arranged to slide in said sleeve, and having means to engage the said recesses; substantially as described.
2. In a rod-adjuster, a cross-head having an upwardly-extending sleeve provided with a vertical slot having spaced offset recesses, and a rod having a pin arranged to move in said slot and engage any one of the said recesses; substantially as described.
3. A rod-adjuster having a head provided with an upwardly-extended sleeve formed with a vertical slot having offset recesses, and a rod having means movable in the slot, and arranged to engage said recesses, together with means for securing the rod in the sleeve; substantially as described.
4. A rod-adjuster having a head provided with an upwardly-extending slotted sleeve formed with oflset recesses, and a rod arranged to slide in said sleeve and having means to engage the said recesses, said head having an enlarged opening therethrough for the rod substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN A. STOOPS. Witnesses:
