Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. LANNING, Jr., a citizen of the United States, and a resident of rloledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Adjustable Eccentric; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.V
My invention relates to eccentrics of the adjustable type, and has for its object the provision of an improved means of this character, which is simple, strong and durable in its construction, and capable of being easily and quickly adjusted to suit the throw desired, thus enhancing its practicability and commercial value.
rlhe invention is fully describedin the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. 1 with parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the eccentric adjusted for a greater throw, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation of Fig. 3 with a portion broken away.
Referring to the drawings, 1`designates a shaft having, in the present instance, a rectangular' portion 2, asubstantially centrally located portion of one side of which is recessed or cut away, as at 3, to provide an eccentric or wrist-pin portion 4. The recess 8 preferably extends in depth to the axis of the shaft, as indicated, and the wrist-pin portion 4 is preferably of rectangular form in cross-section, as indicated, and has its outer side projecting slightly beyond the side of the shaft 1 to facilitate the forming of a dove-tailed groove 5 longitudinally therein substantially throughout its length for the purpose hereinafter described. A sleeve 6, having a preferably eccentrically disposed opening 7 longitudinally therethrough of substantially the cross-sectional area and shape of the shaft portion 2, is mounted upon such shaft portion and has `the ends of its opening 7 laterally recessed or enlarged at opposite sides thereof, as shown at 8 and 9. The recesses 8 register with and are of suitable size to permitthe crank-arm portionsof the shaft part 2 to work therein when thesleeve is placed in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, with one side portion thereof seating within the recess 3, in which position the sleeve which forms the eccentric journal of the device has its maximuniA throw.V The sleeve 6 is circumferentially recessed, as at 10, to providea journal with which the crank end of a plunger may engage, as well understood in the art.
For the purpose of locking Vthe sleeve 6in lthe shortened-throw position shown in Figs.
1 and 2, a spring pressed plunger or pin 11 is mounted in an opening 12 in each shoulder 10a thereof in position for its inner end to work within the associated sleeve recess 8 and engage over the inner ends of the crank arm portions o-f the shaft part 2, whereby to coperate with the side wall of the opening 7 with which the outer side of the shaft part 2 co-acts to rigidly hold the sleeve 6 in adjusted position thereon, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 2. A stem 13 projects from each plunger 11 without the sleeve through a plug 14 which removably closes the outer end ofthe opening 12, thus facilitating a withdrawal of each plunger from locking engagement with the shaft part 2 and against the tension of the spring 15.
Key- blocks 16, 16 are carried by the outer side of the shaft portion 2 for sliding movements longitudinally thereof, due to parts thereof working within the complemental dove-tailed groove 5 in the shaft portion, said blocks being adapted to closely t between the outer side of suoli shaft portion and the respective side wall of the sleeve opening 7 when the sleeve is in the maximum-throw position shown in Figs. 8 and 4, thus serving to firmly lock the sleeve in such position relative to the wrist-pin 4. Then the sleeve 6 is in its shortened-throw position the key-blocks 16 are disposed at the outer ends of the dove-tailed groove 5 and rest neutral within the registering recesses 9, which are disposed at the ends of the sleeve opening 7 in opposition to the recesses therein. The key-blocks 16 are prevented from withdrawal from the ends of the guide groove 5 by the provision of stoppins 17 or other suitable stop means at the ends of the groove.
