E. REYNOLDS. DISGONNEOTING DEVICE FOR EGOENTRIO RODS. No. 448,259. Patented Mar. 17; 18 91.
4 W? AW/% C v UNITED STATES PATENT Prion.
EDlVIN REYNOLDS, OF MIIAVAUKEE, \VISCONSIN.
DI SCONNECTING DEVICE FOR ECCENTR lC-RODS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,259, dated March 1?, 1891.
Application filed December 10,1890- Serial No. 374,237. (No model.)
'l'o aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWIN REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of \Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disconnecting De: vices for Eccentric-Rods, of which the followin g is a specification.
My invention relates to steam-engines, and has reference more particularly to a novel construction of mechanism whereby the eccentric-rod may be readily disconnected from and connected to the wrist-plate.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved disconnecting device; Fig. 2, a horizontal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 a transverse vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Figs. 1 and 2.
A indicates the wrist-plate, and C an openended cup or socket, which is secured to the wrist-plate by means of a bolt B.- Fitting into I permit the eccentric rod or stem D, which is designed to be locked to the casting E, to turn with the latter at right angles to the axis of the cup 0, the latter being cut away on its upper and lower faces, as shown in Fig. 3, to permit of this motion of the eccentric-rod.
- The cup-shaped casting E is provided beyond the cup 0 with a hollow neck or exten sion E, in which is fitted a rod or stem F, having at its outer end a handle G, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This rod or stem is provided with a key or stud II, which is designed to fit into a longitudinal groove or key-seat H in the neck or extension E, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the stem is further provided near its inner end with an enlargement F, which serves to guide the stem in its longitudinal movements. The extreme inner end of the stem is designed to enter a hole or opening J, formed in the eccentric-rod D,as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and when the stem or pin is in engagement with the eccentric-rod and the latter locked to the casting E by means of the stud H and the groove H the eccentric-rod will be thereby locked to the casting E.
A coilspring I, bearing at one end against the enlargement F of the stem F and at the opposite end against the inner wall in the neck or extension E, serves to hold the stem or pin in engagement with the eccentric-rod, and to disconnect the two stems it is necessary to overcome the force of the coil-spring.
hen it is desired to withdraw the rod or stem F from engagement with the eccentricrod D, the former will be pulled outward, as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and then given a slight turn, so as to bring the stud or key H out of line with the groove or slot II and cause the said stud or projection to rest upon the outer end of the extension E of the casting E, and thereby hold the said pin or stem Foot of engagement with the ec centric-rod.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In combination with a wrist-plate provided with a perforated socket piece 0, through which the eccentric-rod passes, a. casting E, mounted within the socket and also perforated to receive the eccentric-rod, and means, substantially such as shown, for locking the eccentric-rod to the casting.
2. In combination with a wrist-plate provided with a cup-shaped socket C, a casting E, fitting therein and adapted to receive the cocentric-rod, and a pin or stem F, carried by the casting E and adapted to engage the cocentric-rod, all substantially as shown.
In combination with a wrist-plate pro vided with the cup-shaped socket O,perforated to receive the eccentric-rod, the casting E, fitting Within the cup-shaped socket, perforated to receive the eccentric-rod, and provided also with a neck or extension having a groove H, and a pin or bolt F, adapted to engage the cocentric-rod and provided with a stud or projection H,all substantially as shown and described.
4:. In combination with a wrist-plate provided with a cup-shaped socket O, perforated to receive the eccentric-rod, the casting E, fitting within the cup-shaped socket, perforated to receive the eccentric-rod,and provided with a neck or extension E, having a groove H, a rod or stem F, provided at its outer end with a handle and having its inner end fashioned to engage the eccentric-rod, aspring adapted to In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand hold the steln normally in engagement with in the presence of two Witnesses. the eccentnc-rod, and a stem or pr03eet10n H,
carried by the stem or bolt F and working EDWIN REYNOLDS. 5 within a groove 11', formed in the neck or ex- Vitnesses:
tension E, all substantially as shown and de FRED. A. LARKIN,
scribed. MATT \VENGLER.
