Be it known that I, Isaac Hmsonx, a citizen of the United States, residing in New York, in the borough of Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gar bage-Cans, of which the following is a speciiication.

This invention relates to an improved construction of garbage-cans by which increased strength is imparted to the same, whereby the cans can resist the heavy wear and tear to which they are exposed and in which the cover is locked to the body of the can in an improved manner; and the invention consists of a garbage-can the body of which is formed of a cylindrical shell of suitable sheet metal, top and bottom rims made of pipe provided with a circular slit for the upper and lower ends of the body, and angular braces connecting the upper and lower rims, said braces being riveted to the rims and at their median points of contact.

The invention consists, further, of braces for reinforcing the bottom of the can, and, lastly, of means for holding the cover of the can in locked position on the can-body, as will be hereinaf. er described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved garbage-can. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same, with a por tion broken away. Fig. 3 is a bottom view also with a portion broken away; and Figs. at and 5 are detail transverse sections, respectively, on line el 4, Fig. 2, and on line 5 5, Fig. 1.

The middle short'straight portions of the fiat V-shaped braces d are riveted together, as shown at r. Asthe braces are arranged around the cylindrical body aand form a connection between the upper and lower rims b b, they reinforce the body, prevent injury to the same, and hold the rims at the pit-per distance from each other, so as to prevent any crushing by the strain exerted on the can.

Thebottom a is also reinforced against bending in either direction, either by the load placed in the can or from injury from below, by means of angular braces e, which are provided with straightmiddle ortions e and ends e which are bent at rig 'tangles to the main portion of the brace, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The bent-over ends e are riveted to the bottom rim b by means of the same rivets f by which the braces d of the body are secured to the rims, as shown in Fig. 5, said rivetsfpassing through the bottom rim, the lower end of the body a, and the downwardlybent circumferential flange of the bottom a as shown in Fig. 5. In this manner these rivets form a very reliable connectionbetween the different parts of the can. The straight middle portions e of the bottom braces e abut against each other and are connec'ted by rivets so as to resist the inward strain on the bottom rim and reinforce the bottomed against buckling or other injury.

The cover g is provided with a handle 9, which is provided at its ends with opposite alined elongations or extensions 9 one end being bent up, so as to form a lip 9 which engages one of two slotted lugs g, that are riveted by the rivets f to the upper rim 1) of the can.
