Be it known that we, FREDERICK Snnmou and VIL'LIAM PICKABD, subjects of the King of Grbat Britain, residing at Burlington and Bartonville, respectively, iii the Pr Vince of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in D-Handles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to D-handles for shovels, spades and other tools, and more particularly to wooden handles which are formed by inserting a grip-bar between the ends of a fork or yoke formed by bifurcating and spreading the upper portion of a wooden haft or-stem to which the tool is secured.

The'objects of the invention are to provide a wooden handle of this character that is reinforced by metallic parts which are arranged to protect the wooden portions of the handle from injury to prevent splitting or cracking of the wood, and to eliminate the wear such as would be occasioned by i the friction between the wood and harder ob- }ects.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of the constructions and combinations which will be hereinafterset forth and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the drawings, the wooden haft or stem to which the metallic shovel, spade or other tool, is secured, is only partially shown, and is indicated 1. The upper end of this wooden haft or stem is bifurcated to provide two arms 2 and 3, which are spread and bent to provide a fork or yoke. A rivet 4 is preferably passed through the stem just below the beginning of the bifurcation and transversely thereto to preven it from splitting.

Inserted between the spaced upper-ends of the two arms 2 and 8, is a grip-bar 5, which is cylindrical in shape. Each end of this grip-bar is of reduced diameter as at 5, and is titt; d within a rin 6 forming an integral part of a cup-shape cap 7. their lower ends by rivets 9.- The upper portions of these strips project into the caps 7 and fit snugly against the inner cylindrical shaped wall of the cap. The upper end 10 of each strip is bent over the end of an arm and is held in. position by the caps which bear against it. A rod or rivet '11 passes through the grip-bar 4, and also through the ends of the arms 2 and 3, the reinforcing strips 8 and the caps 7, and rigidly unites these parts together. The rivet 11 will also hold the caps 7 in close engagement with the reinforcing strips 8, and its bent over portion 10, so that these parts. will be rigidly heldtogether.

The reinforcing strip 8 extends sufficiently down the arn1s'2 and 3 to prevent the arm from splitting or cracl'ring under the stresses and strains to which the handle is subjected, while the tool is being used. These strips will also serve to protectthe wooden arms 2 and 3 should the tool be subjected to rough usage and will also serve to prevent undue wear of the arms which would be occasioned by the arms riibbing against a harder object such as the sides of a wagon or the like. It will, therefore, be seen that the construction described provides a rigid and durable handle which is of cheap construction and one which can be readily manufactured. A

We claim:

1. A D-handle for tools comprising a wooden haft having a bifurcated upper end providing diverging arms, a grip-bar between the upper ends of the arms, caps mounted on the upper ends of said arms engaging said grip-bar, reinforcing strips secured to said arms, the upper ends of said strips being concealed within said caps, and a: pin' passing through said arms, grip-bar, caps and reinforcing strips.v

2. A D-handle for tools comprising a v wooden'haft having a bifurcated upper and providing diverging arms, a grip-bar between the upper ends of said arms, caps the portion of said reinforcing strips W fitting over the ends of said grip-bar, said 5 caps having openings therein through which "said arms pass, reinforcing strips secured to said arms having their upper ends projecting through said opening in said caps, and

a pin passing through said arms, grip-bar, 10 caps and reinforcing strips.

3. A .D-handle for tools comprising a wooden haft having a bifurcated upper end providing diverging arms, a grip-bar between the upper ends of said arms, caps L5 fitting over the ends of said grip-bar, reinforcing strips on said arms secured to the outer surface of said arms, saidreinforcing strips having their upper ends bent over the upper edge of said arms, said caps having 20 openings therein through which said arms and reinforcing strips pass, and a pin passing through said arms, grip-bar, caps and I reinforcing strips.

4.
