Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H, HART, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Necktie-Shield, of which the following is a specification.

My invention consists of an improvement in a necktie-shield embodying means for stiffening the same, whereby its strength and durability are increased.

Figure 1 represents a face view of a necktie-shield embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a section thereof on line at r, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents the shield in primary condition. Fig. 4 represents a section thereof on line y y, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 represents a perspec tive view of the stiffening device employed in primary condition. Fig. 6 represents a section of the shield and stiffener, the latter being in primary condition. Figs. 7 and 8 represent face views of modified shapes of the,

stiffener.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a necktieshield which, excepting the feature of my invention applied thereto, is of usual form.

B designates a slit formed transversely in the said shield and extending in the present case in curved direction.

C designates a stifiener which is constructed of sheet metal or other suitablepliable material and which is primarily bent on itself and comparatively T-shaped in cross-section, as plainly shown in Figs. 5 and 6.

The limbs D of the stiffener are passed through the slit B, and the cross-limb or head E is rested on one face of the shield, said limbs projecting beyond the opposite face, as shown in Fig. 6. A suitable implement or tool is inserted between the limbs D, and the latter spread apart and pressed upon the face of the shield opposite to the head E, similar to the latter, forming the head E, the

stiffener thus assuming an H-shape, a portion E of the limb remaining in the slit and being the connecting-necks of the heads, it being noticed that the stiffener is virtually clenched on the opposite faces of the shield, whereby it firmly retains its position, and the shield is braced and strengthened while being sufficiently flexible or yielding for requirements, it being also evident that by the employment of the stiffener the strength and durability of the shield are increased and its life accordingly prolonged.

Fig. 7 shows a stiffener of ri ht-lined direction, and a shield of different shape from that of the previous figures, and Fig. 8 shows a stiffener deflected from a right line without in either case producing different results.

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A necktie-shield provided with a stiffener therefor composed of a plurality of heads and a member integral therewith connecting the same.

2. A necktie-shield in combination with a stiffener therefor composed of a member adapted to occupy an opening in the shield and heads on the opposite ends of said member integral with the same respectively engaging the opposite faces of the shield.

3. A necktie-shield provided with a stiffener therefor composed of a plurality of heads and a member joining the same, said heads and member being of integral construction of material bent on itself.

4. A necktie-shield having a stiffener therefor composed of a plurality of heads, respectively occupying the opposite faces of the shield and a connection for said heads integral with the same occupying an opening in the shield.
