Specification of Letters Patent.
SHEET-METAL Comersucrlow.
Patented Dec. 25, 190.
Application filed June 2, 1996. Serial llc. 319,894.
To alll whom t may concern:
, VBe it known that l, PETER. M. YVEGE, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident oi'Youngstown, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Metal Construction, of which the following is a speciiication, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to sheet-metal construction of doors, panels, wardrobe-lockers, and other structures, although the princi- `ples of construction inay be applied vhatever connection they may be found useful.
The objects of the invention are to iinlprove upon such'structures and secure iinproved ventilation where ventilation is required and obtain lightness with strength.
Further objects of the invention will hereinafter appear; and to these ends the invention consists of a sheet-metal construction for carrying out the above objects embodying the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts having the general mode ol operation substantially as hereinafter Jr'ully described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a iront view of' a locker-door embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the locker-door on the line a* of Fig. l. F ig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line y y of Fig. l. Fig. el is a sectional plan view of the whole locker. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the back of the locker. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the end ol the locker.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the uprights for the door, which are prelerably of sheet metal bent into the required shape. The door is adapted to be hinged to the flange B or otherwise secured between the uprights. Over the door is preferably arranged a sheet-metal frame' O. The sheet-metal door comprises the panel D, preferably having sheet-metal frames or raised portions E at each side and a rein-` forcement F at thetop. The panel D in this instance consists of a sheet oi metal having integral parts G pressed out beyond the plane of the sheet. parts or rojections, the sheet is slit as desired, in t is instance two rows of horizontal slits being Jformed, andthe metal irnnediately adjacent the slits is then forced outln order to form these' ward beyond the plane ot, the sheet. l In the figures the slits are formed along the edges H, so that when the metal is forced outward curved pockets J are provided. In constructing the door the panel is placed With the pockets J pointing downward, and thus covering the openings K beneath them.
In forming the pockets J the Inetal of the pocket is somewhat stretched or drawn in order to make the loop projecting beyond theplane of the original sheet of metal.
In Figs. 4, 5, and 6 the whole locker is illustrated, showing how the invention is applied to both the back of the locker and one side, as well as the door. The back and sides of the locker comprise sheets of metal having the saine construction described in connection with the door-panel.
According to this invention it will be seen that the locker-door is provided with ventopenings K for ventilation, and as the pockets extend over the openings and shield them dust is shed therefrom, and the outside of the doors may be washed without the water en- ,tering the openings K. The pockets J also shed the wash-water.
By reason of this construction great strength is added to the door, and it is at the saine time very light.
Obviously some features of this invention may be used without others 'and the invention may be embodied in widely-varying forms.
Therefore, without limiting the invention to the devices shown and described, and without enumerating equivalents, I claim, a id desire to obtain by Letters Patent, the t' ol l owing z l. A sheet-metal locker provided with pockets pressed outwardly beyond the plane ol' the body and all extending downwardly over o eniugs beneath said pockets or shields.
2. sheet-metal locker having horizontal slits in pairs, the metal between the pairs of slits being forced outward beyond the plane of the sheet to forni shields or pockets covering the openings beneath, all said shields extending downward.
3. A sheet-metalv locker` having portions integral therewith and forced outwardly beyond the plane of the sheet and all extending downwardly to form shields for the openings beneath.
