Specification of Letters Patent. Application 516a June 27,1906- 8eria1 No.323.574.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
i To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, KERSON NURLAN, a citizen of the United States of America, re siding in the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have, invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Arms for Supporting Wires, &,c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact'description, reference being had to the accom anymg drawings, forming no part of this spec' cation. I
, My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in arms for poles, walls, &e., for supporting electric wires, cables, &c., and has for its object toproduce an'arm which can be clam ed to and unclamped from poles, walls, 0., and one which can be extended inle h on one or both ends for'supporting additional wires, 85c.
In cross-arms with which I am familiar it has been customary to make these arms of suflicient length to carry the maximum amount of wires which it is contemplated the arms should-ever be called-upon to support,
This construction calls for, when, say, only] two wires are carriedby saidgarms, an ex;-
pense in the cost'of unnecessary metal of" which the cross-arm ismade, and it is this expense I propose to f save by the construc tion' shown in theaccomp' y sd i gs proved arm shown attached to. a suplportmga post: Fig II isa side elevation of t e-sax'nel.
E s e s fip gr'p u e which) g arm '13 is icomposdloftwo analogoussdtiong 1, which are rovided ,-upon their .inne'ri ends with "prefers approximately semicircular recesses; '2, which whenxpropefly ositioned the. supp'ortingepost- Agan -clamped 4o't ereto by-means of bolts 3,, which pass throughv perforated laterally-disposed lugs or cars 4, formed on said sections-1, reduce an arm whose members extend latera y from the pole A. The outer. ends of these armsections 1 areeachprovided'with a preferably semicircular recess 5, and extend laterally from the outer ends of said sccti dli are perforated lugs cream 6. When it isintended that the arm as an entirety shall only sup port two wires, I employ cap-pieces 7, h aving recesses 8 complementary to the recesses 5 and which are provided with perforated lugs or eam similar to the lugs or ears 6, and b which recesses and logs a suitable insulator 5 5 X (shown in dotted lines upon the left-hand tensidnside of the drawings) canbe secured to the ends of the sections 1.
When occasion demands that more wires should be supported upo'nthe arm, all that is necessary to do is to remove the cap-piece or cap-pieces 7 and in it or their places secure an extension bar or bars 10, which bar or bars 10 are provided upon each end with recesses and lugs or cars, the purpose of which is manifest from an inspection of the right-hand side of the drawings, the capiece 7 being employed to 006 erate with the outer end of this extensionar 10'.
I claim 1. A newarticle of manufacture consisting of an arm constructed to receive an extension member, and an extension member constructedfonattachment to said arm and arranged to have another extensionmember attached thereto, substantially as set forth.. 7 5 v '2. A su p0 ing-arni formed in sections and provi ed with means whereby it can be secured to a'support; and'means whereby thesections are detaehably fastened together for securing in'place between them an element 'for su porting wires and the like.
3. provided with means whereby -it' 'can be secured to a support, detachable means, for securing in place an element for 'suppoi'tingwires andlthe like, and an'exten- 'sion-harwhich can're and petformthe' function of said detac able means,isubstan-.'
tiallyfasfset' forth. 4
- armfghavin'g a recessed end, an ex-.
acomplementaryrecessed 'end, an imeans or securing said arm and said extension-bar togeth 1'; said means healso' designed to sup ort within the re-v cessesof said arm and extension-bar aninsu V lation element, substantially as set forth. 5
5. Thecombination with, a support, of'an arm carried thereby, means for supporting an insulation element upon said arm, an extension-bar, and means for supporting an insulation element upon said extensionbar, r00
substantially as set orth.
6. The combination with a support, of a sectional arm carried thereby, means for sup porting an insulation element upon said arm, an extension-bar, and means for supporting an insulation element 11 on said extensionhar, substantially as set orth.
7.- The combination-with a support, of an arm having a recess "for receiving said support, means for securing said arm to said sup- 1 1c port, means for supporting an insulation elesaid support and to each other means for .10
a o a I ment u on said arm, an extension-bar, and supporting an insulation element upon said means or supporting an insulation element arm, an extension-bar, and means for supupon said extension-bar, substantially as set porting an insulation element upon said ex 7 forth. i. tension-bar, substantially as set forth,
8.; The combination With a support, of a KERSQN NURIANI sectional arm, each'section of which is pro- In presence ofvided with a recess for receiving said sup- 'NELLIE V. ALEXANDER,
port, means for securing said arm-sections to ,BL'ANOHE HOGAN.
