Y y To all whom` t may concern:
vPATENT OFFICE.
A HERMAN O. PRIEBE, OF yBLUE ISLAND,V ILLINOIS.
METAL DRAFT-BEAM.
Specification of rl'uetters Patent.
Patented Dec. 25, 1906.
Appleman and Ju1y`s11, l1906. serial No. 328,554.
Be it known that I, HERMAN O. PRIEBE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Blue Island, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Draft-Beams, of which the following,
' framing of a car taken in connection with the drawings, is a description.
My invention has for its object the production of means for `strengthening the underand to transmit the pulling strain thereon directly to the body-bolster.
. A further obj ect of my invention is to provide means for strengthening and sustaining thelongitudinal sills and I-beamsof theunderframing. Frequently in service the bolts extending through the sills become broken and it becomes necessary to side-track and unload the car to repair it. By the construction hereinafter described, in the event of any broken bolts the sills and underframe of the car are maintained in position without disturbing the load, and the car may continue to destination for repairs.
My improvements are applicable to cars already in service,`as well as to form part of the construction of new cars. k
Other novel features of my invention will be hereinafter fully des cribed, and pointed out in the claims. Y
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, I have illustrated one form of device,
embodying the principal features of my invention, although the same may be carried into effect in other ways without in the least departing from the spirit thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of part of the underframing of a car, showing my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of thesame, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a detail of the I-beam reinforcing-plate.
In the drawings only so much of theunderi framing of a car has been illustrated as has been considered necessaryto show the application of my device thereto.
In carrying out said invention, A represents the iioor of the car; A, the longitudinal center sills having bolted cured thereto the I-bearns against the body-bolster O in the usual manner. Reinforcing-plates O are secured to the I-beams B and are provided with` co- B B, which abut or otherwise sevincident elongated Openings I b for the follower-bars forming part of the construction of the draft-rigging.- Said plates C and I- beams B are also provided with annular openings b for a purpose hereinafter described. In this .construction I have provided a reinforcement for the center sills A',
-by means of which in case of breakage of the bolts a a, or either of them, when the car is loaded, it is not necessary to unload the car for the purpose of repairing the same. I have provided U-bolts E, which iit around the sills A, (shown more clearly in Fig. 3,) exp tending through the webs a vof the I-beams B, and are rigidly secured to the sills A by lbolts e or otherwise.
Abutting against the side of thebody-bolster C are the castings D D, through which are secured the U-bolts kD', which extend over or through the body-bolster O and through openings t in the I-beams B and reinforcing-plates C. By .this construction the pulling strain on the car is transmitted directly to the body-bolster.
The advantages of this construction will be apparent to those skilled in the art. My improvements are very simple in construction, can be easily and cheaply manufactured and placed in position, and are effectual in all respects in the performance of their functions.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope, and hence Ido not desire to be limited to the precise construction and arrangement of parts here shown.
, I claimv l. In a device of the class described the combination of the body-bolster and I- beams forming part of the underframing of a car, castings abutting against the aforesaid bolster and U-bolts extending through the aforesaid I-beams and castings. 2. InA a device of' the class described, the combination of the body-bolster and I- beams forming part of the underframing of a car, castings abutting against said body-bolster, U-bolts extending through the aforesaid I-beams, over the body-bolster and through IOO the aforesaid castings, and U-bolts secured f combination of the body bolster and I- beams forming part of the underframing of a IIO car, castings abutting` against said bolster, f oar, With U-bolts surrounding said sills and reinforcing-plates, U-bolts extendingthrough engaging the Web of the I-beains, substanthe Lbearns and reinforcing-plates; over the tially as described. body-bolster and through the aforesaid oast- In testimony whereof' I have signed this 5 ings, and U-bolts secured to the Center sills specification in the presence of' two subserib- I 5 and Web of the I-beams, substantially as ing Witnesses.
described. HERMAN C. PRIEBE.
4. In a device of the class described the Witnesses: combination of the longitudinal sills and I- 1 JAMES I). CRANE,
1o beams forming part of the underframing of a F. II. KING.
