STRIKING-PLATE.

To all whom it ma concern:
Be it known t at we, THOMAS RODMAN and FRANK M. STEVENSON, citizens of the United States, and residents of Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, and Sharon, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, respectively, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Striking-Plates; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to striking plates adapted to be secured to the end of the center beam of a railway car, and more particularly to striking plates composed of a resilient ductile metal.
One of the principal objects of our invention is to provide a striking olate of thls class which will serve the double purpose of receiving the blow from the horn of a coupler and also serve as a tying member to tie the center sills together.
A further object of our invention is to provide a plate of this class which will be composed of forged metal and so formed asto have a certain resiliency which will absorb the blow from a horn of a coupler, and which will not be liable to break and become out of order.
A still further object is to form such a plate composed of forged metal of great ductility, which would withstand, wlthout fracture, blows that would ordinarily break many striking plates in use to-day.
Other advantages, such as simplicity, durability, and the general improvement of the art, will be more fully brought out in the following specification and illustrated a in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a portion of the drawhcad cmbodying our invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a view of the blank for forming the striking plate; Fig. 4 is a plan View of the striking plate; Fig. 5 is a section on the lines 5-5 Fig. 4; and Fig. 6. is a rear elevation of the st1'ik ing plate.

It will be readily understood that, al though we have shown and described one specific form of our invention in this application, various changes in design and structure may be made by the mechanic skilled in the art, without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 1. designates the base or bottom web flange of our striking plate A, which is formed from the blank B. A vertical front portion 2 is integral with the base 1 and forms a nose or butter adapted to take the blow of the coupler horn, the portion 2 being curved transversely to add stiffness and durability. Above the portion 2 and integral. therewith and extending rearwardly on an angle is a web portion 3 which serves to add resiliency to the portion 2 and to connect the same to the top flange 4.- which supports the whole device on the center sills 5 of a car by means of bolts 6.
Check plates, or side flanges 7 are formed integral with the base 1, front '2 and web portion 3. The flanges 7 extend rearwardly along the inside faces of the center sill and are secured thereto by rivets or bolts 8 passing through apertures 9, thus serving to tie the center sill channels and bracing front portion 2 and web portion 3.
This novel form of striking plate is adapted to be placed at the extreme end of the center sill of a car and to receive the force of the blow from the horn of the coupler C and absorb the same thereby preventing the damaging of the center sill.
What we claim is:-
