Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
M.S. OAHILL, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVED BRONZE DRESSING FOR LEATHER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 83,925, dated November 10, 1868.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, M. S. OAHILL, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Bronze Dressing for Leather; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same.
The object of this invention is to provide a fluid which will give a reasonably permanent bronze color to leather, and is more particularly designed as an accessory article in the boot and shoe trade, inasmuch as it will enable dealers to renovate their bronze shoes or boots when the same have become shop-worn and tarnished, as is the case when this class of goods have been kept on hand for considerable time or much handled.
By means of this fluid any ordinary boot, shoe, or slipper may be given a brilliant and durable bronze finish. For family use, in touching up or renovating such bronze shoes, it is also of important value, as such shoes become worn and unpleasin g, as to the bronze hue, long before the shoe itself is worn out, thus causing the same to look so dingy and unsightly as to be laid aside by the wearer.
My invention consists of a preparation of the aniline color called fuschine with any spirit varnish, as shellac, copal, and other analogous gum and spirit varnishes. A small quantity of aniline blue may be added to increase the brilliancy of the dressing, if desired. I also the limit to the quantity of fuschine being the point of saturation, or the quantity which the varnish will dissolve, which is about, as above stated, two ounces of fuschine to one pint of varnish. When the aniline blue is added I use about one-half ounce of blue to the above proportions. WVhen bronze powder is added, I use about two ounces of the powder to one gallon of the prepared fluid or dressing. It is applied with a soft brush, and dries in from one to two minutes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bronze dressing for leather composed of spirit varnish and aniline fug cliine, substantially as herein set forth, either with or without the addition of aniline blue or bronzed powder, all as described, as a new article of manufacture.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 1st day of September, 1868.
M. S. ()AHILL.
W'itnesses:
FRANK BLooKLEY, ALEX. F. Ronnars.
