Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
D. L. PIGKARD, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED WATER-PROOF BLACKING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,383, dated October 10, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DANIEL L. PICKARD, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Compound in Water-Proof Blacking for Boots, Shoes, Harness, and Carriage-Tops, and for finishing leather for the above uses, as it preserves the leather beyond anything known, hesides giving it a soft rich polish, without soiling the hands, carpet, or garments, and is thoroughly water-proof on calf, kid, and morocco 5 and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full and exact description thereof.
The invention consists in the following compound: first, beeswax; second, star or the sperm of lard; third, white pitch; fourth, linseed-oil; fifth, varnish of copal.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and compound the same, I will proceed to describe the proportions, in the following manner:
I take one part of beeswax and one part of star, one-eighth part of white pitch, and melt them together. Of the fluid take one part of varnish of copal and three parts of linseed-oil, mix them together, then add one gill of the compound fluid to every four pounds of the solid compound, adding so much lamp-black as will give it the desired color.
Though I prefer the above proportions, I do not confine myself to them, as a similar result may be produced by varying them.
What I claim as myinvention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The compounding of the several ingredients, as specified, so as to produce a composition substantially such as herein described.
D. L. PICKABD.
