Description

UNITED T OFF ORRIN F. BATTEY, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,144, dated July 18, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ()RRIN F. BATTEY, of the city and county of WVorcester and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Anti-fearing Preparation for Leather; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention belongs to compound and use the same.
The object of my present invention is to produce a compound or preparation which, when applied to leather and to articles made therefrom, or to the soles or other portions of boots and shoes, will in a great degree prevent the abrasion or wearing away of the leather, and thus increase the durability of the articles to which it is applied.
My invention consists in a preparation compounded of the ingredients hereinafter named, substantially in the proportions and for the purpose set forth.
My improved anti-wearing preparation is composed of the following-named ingredients in bulk proportions, viz.: Tincture of tannin, one part; boiled linseed-oil, two parts; copal or amber varnish, four parts; and as a coloring agent I add of asphaltum from one to two parts, according to the depth of color required. hen no coloring matter is required the asphaltum may be omitted; or in case it is desirable to produce other colors than brown or black any other coloring matter may be employed, provrdin g it is such as will not destroy the efficacy of the other ingre dients. The preparation can be made harder or of greater consistency by increasing the proportion of varnish; or it may be made softer or more fluid by increasing the proportion of oil. The
proportion will, of course, require some slight variation, owing to the quality of the materials used.
. It is well known that large quantities of leather are hurried through the process of tanning, and the gelatine of the hide in some cases is not wholly converted into leather, but remains in a semi-converted state. By applying my improved preparation to such leather the tannin contained therein tends to complete the process of convertin g the gelatine, while the other ingredients tend to consolidate and unite the fibers, thus rendering the leather firm and tenacious, and greatly increasing its durability by preventing abrasion and the wearing away of the material. The preparation may be applied to the leather previous to its being manufactured into goods, or it may be applied to such articles or goods after they are manufactured, and by its use soft and spongy leather is made solid and compact, and the dura bility and value of the articles constructed th erefrom greatly increased. The preparation is eX- cellent, and especially adapted for application to the soles and other portions of shoes and boots, as it serves as a water-proofing and blacking, besides rendering the leather less subject to abrasion and wear.
Having described my anti-wearing preparation for leather, what I claim therein as new and of my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An anti-wearing preparation, compounded of the ingredients herein named substantially in the proportions specified and for the purposes set forth.
ORRIN F. BATTEY.
