UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SANITARY PROTECTOR FOR HEAD-RESTS FOR BARBE-RS CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1906.
Application filed June 8, 1906. Serial No. 320.852.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED MILLER, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Protectors for Head-Rests for Barbers Chairs, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sanitary head-rests for barbers chairs; and the object of the invention is to devise a simple means whereby the head-rest may be preserved in a sanitary condition and the use of towels thereon dispensed with and at the same time provide paper to receive the lather from the razor.
Further objects are to make the device capable of being operated and utilized by the barber behind the chair, and thus obviate interfering with the comfort of the customer or occupant of the chair.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a head-rest provided with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section.
In the drawings like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A is the cushion of the head-rest, which is supported on a base A, located at the top of the stem B.
2 represents bearings extending forwardly from t e ends of the base of the head-rest, in which is carried the roller A A represents rearwardly-extending lugs attached to the head-rest, and 3 represents hangers from which the cylinder O is supported, such hangers being suitably fastened to the ends of the cylinder.
C is a knife or cutting-bar secured to the cylinder, and O is the longitudinal areshaped flap, which is hinged at O to the main body of the cylinder and extends to the slot 4: at the top, being held closed by any suitable spring or other means.
E is the roller on which the paper D is carried. The paper passes outwardly through the slot 4 over the top of the head-rest, then under the roller A and backwardly again underneath the top layer, thence downwardly in front of the hangers A and cylinder C.
The position shown in the drawings is that in which the cylinder O ordinarily hangs when at rest.
In order to enable the paper to be cut and a clean portion of the paper to be substituted at the top after a customer has left the chair and ready for another customer, I pull upon the paper D, thereby throwing it and the roller 0 into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which position the paper may be readily drawn outwardly until suflicient has been taken away to leave a clean portion at the top of the head-rest.
By pressing slightly upon the roller and giving a lateral pressure to the paper where the knife-bar contacts with the same I am enabled to sever the paper on the line of the knife-bar. This severed paper may be utilized to receive the lather from the razor when shaving a customer.
I am aware that it is not broadly new to provide a paper cover for the top of the headrest nor to have a cylinder in which the paper is located, and I do not claim the use of the cylinder and paper, broadly. In my invention, however, the aper is carried in a roller behind the hea -rest and is manipulated from behind the chair Without interfering with the comfort of the customer, which is an important desideratum.
IVhat I claim as my invention is 1. The combination with the head-rest, of a roller located in front of the head-rest, a cylinder hung from the rear of the head-rest and carrying a roll of paper, the aper from which extends through a slot in t e cylinder up over the head-rest around the front roller and backwardly again underneath the up er layer of paper and down in front of the cyIi der as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination with the head-rest, of a roller located in front of the head-rest, a cylinder hung from the rear of the head-rest and carrying a roll of paper, the aper from which extends through a slot in the cylinder up over the head-rest around the front roller and backwardly again underneath the up er layer of paper and down in front of the cy inder, and a knife-bar carried by the cylinder as and for the purpose specified.
3. The combination with the head-rest, of a roller located in front of the head-rest, a paper-carrying means located to the rear of the head-rest, the paper of which extends up over the head-rest around the front roller and backwardly again underneath the 11 per layer of paper and down in front 0 the paper-carrying means as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination with the head-rest, of a roller located in front of the head-rest, a
paper-carrying rneans located to the rear of i the headrest, the paper of Which extends up over the head-rest around the front roller and backwardly again in front of the paper-carry- 5 ing means, and means located behind the head-rest for severing the paper as and for the pur ose specified.
5. T e combination With the head-rest, of a roller located in front of the head-rest and a lo roller hung from the rear of the head-rest and carrying the roll of paper, the paper from which extends over the head-rest around the front roller and backwardly again underneath the upper layer of paper and downwardly in front of the rear roller as and for the purpose specified.
