To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HUGH B. FOLEY, a subject of the King of England, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filers, of which the followingl is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a saw-filing machine embodying my invention and shown somewhat in section; Fig. 2, an end view of the same,"Fig. 3, a cross-sectional view, and Fig. 4 a detail end elevation with the outer vise-j aw removed.
This invention relates to that class of machines employed in sharpening saws; and its object is the provision of improved apparavtus whereby operations of this character may be more expeditiously and accurately accomplished than by any other devices known to me.
My invention consists in the novel features and combinations thereof, as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The machine which forms the subj ect-matter of this invention has some features which are described and illustrated in my pending application, Serial No. 267,757, filed June 30, 1905. The features common to both machines may be briefly described as follows: a frame comprising a base portion 2 and an upright standard 3 extending therefrom. The standard is provided adjacent its ends with guides, which in this instance consist of rods 4, secured in lugs 3, upon which is slidably mounted, as by lugs 5, a vertical reciprocal member 6. Journaled in a bearing 7 of the frame-standard is a lspindle 8, having at its inner end a cam 9, from which protrudes a radially-disposed offset crank-arm 10, carrying upon the pin 11 an antifriction-roller 12. The said spindle may be rotated in any suitable and convenient manner, as by a powerbelt passing about a fixed pulley 13 thereon, and which belt when the power is to be discontinued may be shifted, as ordinary, to a loose pulley 14, also provided upon the spindle. The member 6 is provided with an aperture 15, having top and bottom edges 15 and 15 so disposed as to be alternately engaged by the rotating cam 9, whereby said member is positively and alternately elevated and depressed. Horizontally-arranged grooves 16 and 16 are respectively provided in proximity of the upper and lower edges of the said member to furnish guideways for the opposite edges 17 of a horizontally-slidable member 18, which is actuated by the said roller playing in a vertical slot 19 provided. A forwardly-projecting arm 20 is formed or provided upon the member 18 and has at its outer end a socket 20', into which is inserted a ferrule 21, which is adjustably held by a binding-screw 22. The axis of this ferrule is in horizontal alinement with that of a socket 23 upon the body of the member 18, and within the axial holes of this socket and the ferrule the ends of the sharpening-file 24 Vare inserted. Positioned at the forward end of the frame are a pair of vise-jaws 25 and 26, of whichA the former is desirably formed integral with the said frame-standard, and the other jaw 26 is adjustably secured thereto and maintained in position to register with the other jaw by pins 27, fixedly secured to one of the jaws and extending into holes of the other.
The aforedescribed parts, excepting the means for positively moving the member 6, are very similar, both in construction and operation, to the corresponding parts of the machine described in the said pending application. In the present invention, however, the outer vise-jaw 26 is during the forward operative movement of the iile arranged to be drawn against the saw S by a clamping device actuated by the movement of the member 6 and comprises a screw-bolt 27, passing through both ofthe jaws and having at its inner end an eye 27 through which it is connected by a pin 28 with a cam-link 29, provided with a stud 30, which engages in a slot 31 of the member 6. The aperture 28, through which this pin extends, is disposed eccentrically of a cylindrical end 2Q of the link and is arranged to contact with the inner face 25 of the stationary jaw 25, so that as the member 6 is lowered the bolt 27 will be positively drawn toward the rear and moved oppositely during a corresponding movement of the said member, supplemented bya spring 32, bearing against the outer of said jaws, and an adjustment butterfly-nut 33. This nut is desirably formed with a slot 33, thus allowing its being compressed into smaller compass for more closely embracing the bolt 27 and obviating the need of a jam-nut to retain the butteriiy-nut in its set position.
In the upper portion of the frame-standard 3 at the frontend of the machine is a screw- IOO threaded spindle 34, provided with an enlarged head 34 and carrying upon the said head a registering block 35, which is adjustably mova ble transversely of the machine in a slot 3 by manipulating said spindle. Protruding forwardly from the block 35 is a stud 35, which is slidably mounted in a slot 36 of a T-shaped lever 37 and forms the fulcrum therefor. The vertical limb of the lever carries at its lower end a pawl 38, having its point S8 extending to within a short distance of the file and adapted to be severally engaged with the saw-teeth and advance the saw to successively present the teeth to be operated upon during one stroke of the lever 37. Such vibratory motion is imparted to the lever by connecting the horizontal limb 37 with the verticallymovable member 6 by means of a bolt 3E), passing through an aperture37 of the level` and having the bolt-neck 89 thereat made eccentric, whereby a slight variation in position may be given to the axis of oscillation by turning the bolt through the medium of the head 39 and accomplishing an adjustment of the lever without disturbing the transverse position of its fulcrum. Mounted between the said vise-jaws is a cross-bar 40 for sup orting the back edge of the saw, and is regu ated as to height by a thumb-screw 41,passing through a threaded lug 42 of the jaw 25 and having a reduced end 41', which is socketed in the bar.
The driving-spindle 8 when rotated in the direction represented by the arrow in Fig. 1 will cause the cam and crank-pin thereon to actuate the members 6 and 18 to move the file horizontally forward across the sawtooth presented to sharpen the same and then raise the file clear of the saw during the return motion of the file. When this last motion is being effected, the member 6 is as,- cending and in so doing releases the visejaws from their engagement with the saw by raising the cam-link 29 out of operative position and also accomplishes the advance movement of the saw by tilting the lever 37 to move the pawl 38. During the return downward movement of the member 6 the pawl is retracted and the saw clamped between the vise-jaws preparatory to the next following forward motion of the file.
The advantages of the present invention reside in the positive and automatic action of the filing and feeding devices and in the means for adjusting the various parts to accommodate the apparatus to a great variety of work and is especially valuable for sharpening band-saws.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a saw-iiler, areciprocable file-carrier, a supporting-guide therefor, means for moving the guides so as to raise the iile from engagement with the saw, a pair of clampingjaws, a screw-bolt passing through both of said jaws and having an eye on its inner end, a cam-link eccentrically connected to said eye and having a stud received in an opening provided therefor in said guide, said cam-link contacting with one of said jaws, a nut on said bolt, and a spring engaging between said nut and the opposite jaw.
2. In a saw-filer, a reciprocable iile-carrier, a supporting-guide therefor, means for moving the guide so as to raise the file from engagement with the saw, a pair of clampingjaws, a spring-pressed pin passing throughy said jaws, and a connection between said pin and said guide whereby said jaws. may be opened and closed, said connection comprising a cam-link having one end operating in a slot formed therefor in said guide and having its opposite end formed with a head eccentrically pivoted to said pin.
3. In a-saw-iiler, a frame, a reciprocable iile-carrier, a supporting-guide therefor, means for moving the guide so as to raise the iile from engagement with the saw, and means to feed the saw comprising ay T-shaped lever having a slot in` its head, a screwthreaded spindle carried by said frame, a block on the threads of said spindle, a stud carried by said block and projecting in said slot of the lever, a pawl carried by said lever and a bolt eccentrically connected to said lever and said guide.
