SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,464, dated May 19, 1896.

in the file-holder and in devices for feeding and clamping the saw.
According to my invention the file-holder carries the file in and out of the tooth in an inclined plane, whereby all possible damage to the tooth is avoided. The saw, while being operated on by the file, is positively clamped between a stationary and movable jaw, and the feeding device always feeds the very sawtooth which is to be filed, all as more fully hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section thereof substantially through the middle of the machine. Fig. 3 is a detached detail perspective view showing the means for securing the file adj'ustably in the file-holder and also the saw-clamp. Fig. 4 is a diagram illustrating the relative positions of the file and of the feed-pawl in relation to the saw-tooth to be operated upon. Fig. 5 is a plan View of the actuating device of the saw clamp. Fig. 6 is a vertical section through a portion of the bed-plate and one of the inclined guides therefor.
A is the supporting-frame,and B is the main drive-shaft provided with suitable means for 0 applying power.
C is a cam-wheel on the drive-shaft, its rim at two points forming a peripheral cam adapted 'to impart to the cross-head D, into which said rim engages, an intermittent reciprocating motion in a line parallel to the drive-shaft.
E is a guide-rod, to which the cross-head D is secured. I
F is a guide-bearing for the guide-rod E.
G is an arm on the cross-head, and H H are toggle-levers pivotally connected to the arm G and operating in a vertical plane parallel to the main drive-shaft. The lower end of the toggle-lever II is pivotally connected at I to the frame, and the upper end of the toggle-lever H is pivotally connected at I to the under side of the inclined bed-plate J. This bed-plate is slidingly supported upon two inclined guide-bearings K, which form upward extensions of the frame, having a mortise-and-tenon engagement with the under side of the bed-plate J, all so arranged that the bed-plate is free to slide up or down upon the inclined guide-bearing. The inclined bedplate is provided with two parallel guides L, extending longitudinally of the same, and form ways for the reciprocating head M of the file-holder, which is actuated between the ways by means of a pitman N, connecting it with the wrist 0, provided for it on the camwheel C.
- The file-holder consists of a bow-frame P, rigidly secured by suitable arms P to the reciprocating head M, and it is provided with suitable means for adjustably securing the file Q between the ends of the bow-frame. The means which I preferably employ for this purpose are as follows: The end of the file on which the shank is formed I preferably secure by means of suitable wedges in the enlarged tapering socket a, formed in the end of the bowed frame,and the other triangular-shaped end of the file I secure in a holder R, which is formed with a corresponding socket, into which the triangular end is adapted to fit. This holder R has a cylindrical shank adj ustably secured by means of a set-screw b in the opposite head of the bow-frame. For the purpose of adjustment this head is composed of the parts 0 d 6, arranged in such a manner that the part at can be adjusted vertically in relation to the part a, while the part e permits of a horizontal adjustment in relation to the part d. The head at the other end of the bow-frame is also preferably provided with a vertical adjustment.
The front end of the machine is provided with a clamping device to hold the saw in suitable relation with the file. This clamping device is composed of the stationary jaw S and the movable jaw S, pivoted to the stationary jaw at f, and between the two jaws the blade T, which forms the saw-rest, is freely supported by means of the arms g. The arms g are secured to a head h, which has a vertically-sliding engagement with the back of the stationary clamp and has an adjusting-screw t' for adjusting it up or down. The movable jaw is actuated to clamp the saw by a sliding wedge U, which is pivotally secured to the end of the vibrating lever U, which in turn is adj ustably connected to the end of the guide-rod E by means of two adjusting-nuts j, all so arranged that the reciprocating motion of the cross-head D produces a corresponding movement of the wedge U, which in turn produces a clamping action of the movable jaw S.
IV is a feed-pawl pivotally secured at the end of the vibrating lever V. The free end of this vibrating lever projects into the path of the segmental peripheral cam Y, secured upon the main shaft, all arranged in such manner that at each revolution of the main shaft the cam Y vibrates the lever W in such a manner that the feed-pawl TV, which engages with the saw, feeds the saw forwardly the distance of one tooth, and to adjust the movement for diiferent widths of teeth a setscrew 7; is provided to limit the movement of the lever TV in one direction against the action of a letractingspring Z.
The parts being arranged and constructed as shown and described, they are intended to operate as follows: If power is applied to the drive-shaft 13, each revolution of the camwheel will produce a quick intermittent reciprocating motion to the cross-head D in the lateral direction of the machine, and at the same time the file-holder will be longitudinallyreciprocated. The lateral motion of the cross-head D, acting through the toggle-levers H H, produces a sliding motion of the bed-plate J up and down the inclined guides K. These different motions are so timed that when the pitman completes its forward motion one peripheral cam on the cam-wheel operates the bed-plate in such a manner as to shove the bed-plate quickly up the incline. In this position the bed-plate remains, while the pitman returns the reciprocating head to its opposite end, and at or near the completion of this return movement the other peripheral cam on the cam-wheel acts to draw the bed-plate down again in its lower position. As the result ,of this arrangement the file is carried in a similar path-that is, after 1 j the file has completed its forward movement,
during which it has been doing its work, it is lifted out of the saw-tooth in the same mannor as the file-holder is drawn up the inclined bearing K. In this position it is held while the pitman makes its return stroke. Then at or near the completion of the return stroke the other cam on the cam-wheel comes into operation and brings the file back to its starting position.
Fig. 4 in dotted lines shows the position of the file while it is doing its work on the sawtooth, while the other position of the file shown in full lines shows its relative position. while it makes its return stroke. This movement of the file-holder obviates any danger to the hook or point of the saw-tooth, as is liable to occur in other machines where the file is withdrawn in a vertical plane, for the incline of the guides K represents an angle of forty-five degrees, more or less, and if the fileholder is raised out of the tooth at an angle of about forty-five degrees it will give ample clearance with saw-teeth of any form. During the return movement of the file the feeding device is put into operation by the cam Y pushing the free end of the lever \V to one side, so as to give a forward movement to the feed-pawl. This feed-pawl, as is shown in Fig. 4:, passes under the file while the lat ter is raised up and fits the free tooth which has to be acted on by the next succeeding operation of the file. tension of the spring l returns the pawl a fixed distance, regulated by the adjustment of the set-screw 76, and if the adjustment is so made as to retract the feed-pawl to a distance less than the space between two teeth it will be seen that if the saw-tooth should be spaced irregularly each saw-tooth would always be placed in its proper relative position to the file. In passing through the clamp the saw is supported upon the plate T, which latter can be raised by the screw 2, as required, to bring the saw in the necessary relation with the file. The blade is made thin enough so as not to interfere with the clamping action upon the saw-blade and may be exchanged for plates of other thicknesses, as required.
Vhile the saw is being filed the cross-head D is moved into the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position the wedge U has been entered a suflicient distance between the fixed and movable jaws to firmly clamp the saw, the necessary adjustment being obtained by means of the adjusting-nutsj.
The file may be readily adjusted in the proper position for doing its work by the provisions made therefor, and in amanner which will be obvious to any skilled workman.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In a saw-filing machine, the combination with the supporting-frame and driving-shaft, of a file-holder reciprocatingly actuated by said shaft, a reciprocating guideway in which said file-holder reeiprocates, inclined guidebearings on which said guideway is free to slide in a direction at an angle to the line of movement of the file-holder, and means 0pcrated from the driving-shaft for sliding the guideway up and down the inclined guidebearings intermittent between the reciprocating movement of the file-holder, substantially as described.
2. In a saw-filing machine, the combination with the supporting-frame and drivi'n gshaft,
As will be seen the of a reciprocating file-holder, a reciprocating guideway therefor, inclined guide-bearings for said guideway, a cam-Wheel on the driveshaft, actuating connection between the camwheel and file-holder to reciprocate the latter and actuating connection between the camwheel and the guideway for sliding the guideway up and down the inclined guide-bearin gs, substantially as described.
3. In a saw-filin g machine, the combination with the supporting-frame and driving-shaft of the reciprocating file-holder, the inclined guideway therefor, the inclined guide-bearings on which said guideway is adapted to be I moved, the peripheral cam-wheel C on the drive-shaft, the cross-head D engaging with the periphery of the cam-wheel, the togglelevers H H actuated by said cross-head and the pitman N for reciprocating the file-holder, all combined to operate substantially as described.
4. In a saw-filing machine, the combination with the frame, the reciprocating file-holder and driving-shaft, of a saw-clamping device, comprising a fixed jaw, a movable jaw pivoted thereto, an intermittently-reeiprocating wedge adapted to engage and operate said jaw, and a plate freely suspended between the jaws, and provided with means for raising and lowering it, said plate forming a sawrest, substantially as described.
5. In a saw-filing machine, the combination of the frame, the reciprocating fi1eholder, the clamping-jaws, the wedge operating between the jaws and actuating mechanism therefor, comprising the peripheral cam O on the driving-shaft, the intermittently-reciproeating head D actuated thereby, the vibrating lever U and the guide-rod E connecting the head and lever and provided with the adjusting-nuts j j, substantially as described.
6.. In a saw-filing machine, the combination with the frame and drive-shaft, of the reciprocating file-holder, the intermittently-reciprocating guideway therefor moving in a direction at an angle tothe line of movement of the file-holder, the segmental peripheral cam Y on the drive-shaft, the intermittentlyvibrating feed-lever W provided with the feed-pawl W and the adj usting-screw k adapted to limit the retraction of the feed-pawl, substantially as described.
7. In a saw-filing machine, the combination of the following elements,the frame,the driveshaft, the peripheral cam-Wheel, the reciprocating file-holder, the pitman connecting the file-holder with the cam-wheel, the guideway for the file-holder, the inclined guides in which said guideway is slidingly supported, the cross-head D and its connection with the guideway for intermittently reciprocating it upon the inclined guides, the saw-clamp having a pivotal jaw, the intermittently-operating sliding wedge U operated by the crosshead D and the saw-feed comprising the segmental peripheral cam Y, the vibrating lever W and feed-pawl \V, all combined to operate, substantially as described.
