OF NORFOLK, VIRGINIA.
SPOON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 4, 1906.
Application filed March 10. 1906. Serial No. 305,336
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. RANEY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in S oons; and I do declare the following to e a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in nursery and medicine spoons.
One object of the invention is to provide a simple spoon of this character by means of which food or medicine may be conveniently given or administered to children or sick persons.
Another obj ectof the invention is to provide a medicine-spoon of this character which" may bev placed upon any flat surface without spilling the contents.
Another object of the invention is to provide a spoon of this character which willbe easy to manipulate.
A further ob'ect of the invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation of devices of this character, and
' and around said notch. upon the up er side thereby render the same more efficient.
The above and other objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvednursery or medicine spoon with its cover in its closed position. Fig. 2 is a similarview of the same with the cover in its open position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation or edge view of the spoon supported upon a flat horizontal surface. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are sectional views taken, res ectively, upon the planes indicated by the 'ne 4 4, 5 5, and 6 6 in Fig. 3. Figs. 7 and 8 are views'of the upper and inner faces of the cover of the spoon, and Fig. 9 is a plan view of the spoon.
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1
denotes my improved nursery or 'medicine spoon, which comprises a bowl 2 of the usual oval or elliptical form and a curved handle 3 at one end of the same. The handle 3 is so I shaped that its-end 5 is 'adapted to serve as a foot to support the spoon in a horizontal position when it isplaced u on a fiat surface, as shown in Fig. 3 of the awings. In the bowl 2 of the spoon I referably arrange graduation-marks 6, which indicate a tear spoonful and a dessert-spoonful, the bowl being preferably, but not necessarily, made in the size of the ordinary table-spoon. These graduations may be arranged so that an other quantities of liquid may be measure( and they may be formed or provided in the bowl in any suitable manner.
Around the upper edge of the bowl 2 is a surrounding groove 7, ada ted to receive the correspondingl -shaped e ge 8 of a cover 9,.
which is prov]. ed forthe bowl of the spoon.
Said cover 9 corresponds in shape to that of p the bowl 2 and is cut away at one end, as shown at 10, and has its opposite end formed with a handle or stem 11, which is ad ted to be detachably pivoted upon the han le 3 of the spoon. This detachable pivotal connection between the stems 3 and 11 is preferablyeffected by providing inthe upper face of the handle 3 a recess or depression 12 and adjacent thereto a headed screw 13 and by providing in the outer end of the handle 11 upon its under side a headed screw 14 and in said handle 11 on one edge of the same a. U-shaped notch 15. The notch 15 is arranged m a beveled portion or recess 16, formed in the under face of the handle 11,
screw 14 upon the latter is adapted to seat in the depression 12 to cause the cover to be held firml upon the bowl of the spoon, as 1 shown in igs. 1 and 3 of the drawings. In 0 ening the spoon the cover 9 is swung, as s iown in Fig. 2, to a position at right angles to the spoon by pressing or pushing laterally upon the milled or rou hened ortion 18 on the upper and outer end of the andle 11 until the iead of the screw 14 is sprung out of its seat or depression 12. I When this is done, the cover 9 ma be removed with ease. It will be seen that y adjusting the screws 13 and 14 the cover when in closed position will be held securely upon the bowl 2 of the spoon, so that the medicine cannot work out between the engaged edges 7 8 of said bowl and cover.
The construction, use, and advanta es of the invention will be readily understoo from the fore oing'description, taken in connection witi the accompanying drawings. It
will be seen that by providing the spoon with adetacha-ble cover of this kind it may be quickly taken apart to permit it to be thoroughly cleaned, and when in this closed posi-' tion its parts will be held iirlnly together, so that the only escape for the contents of the spoon will be through the open end 10 of the cover.
By constructing the spoon so that it may rest horizontally upon a llat surface and by providing the graduations in its bowl medicine may be quickly and conveniently poured into the same and measured accurarely.
Various changes in the form;- proportion, and the ni'nor details of construction maybe resorted to without departinglfropi the principle or sacrificing fany of theiadivantages of the invention. r
llaving thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A spoon of the character described, comprising a bowl, having a handle at one end provided on its outer side with a recess and a headed stud adjacent to said recess, a
cover for the bowl of said spoon provided with a handle at one end having a notch in one edge adapted to engage said headed stud, and a projection upon the handle of said cover ada )ted to enter the recess in the handle olsai spoon.
2.'A spoon of the character described, comprising a bowl, having a handle at one end formed in its upper face with a recess, a screw-stud in said handle, a cover for the bowl of said spoon, having a handle at one end formed in one of its edges with a notch adapted to engage said screw, and a screw in the under side of the handle of said cover adapted to enter the recess in the handle of said'spoon.
3. A spoon of the character described, comprising a bowl, having a handle at one end formed in its upper face with a recess, a
screw-stud in said handle, a cover for themy hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesscs.
