Description

No. 887,430. PATENTED DEC. 4, 1906.
G. S. STEVENSON.
RATCHET WRENCH.
APPLIUATION FILED JUNE 14,1906.
PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE SEATOR STEVENSON,
OF DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND.
RATCHET-WRENCH- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 4, 1906.
Application filed Tune 14,1906. Serial No. 821.677x
T at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SEATOR STE- VENSON, contractor, of Commercial Chambers, 24. Manse street, Dunedin, New Zealand, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ratchet-'Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to ratchet-wrenches and its object is to provide a-ratchet-wrench adjustable as to size and in which in a compact form several sizes of wrench are available for use. 5. In known ratchetwrenches there is ordinarily only one ratchet-disk containing the opening that is placed on a nut, and the range of use of the wrench is therefore limited to nuts which fit such opening.
According to my invention there are two ratchet-disks which have openings at one side of the same'size and are mounted in-the handle of the wrench superimposed so that their openings may coincide. Each disk is capable of independent circular motion, so that when one disk is moved its closed portion eclipses or covers portion of the opening of the other disk and so reduces it in size. There are several sizes of openings effected by independently revolving one of the disks. The handle may have one pair of disks at each end.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a ratchet-wrench constructed according to my inyc lention and having a pair of disks at each en In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of the wrench. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan of the wrench with the cover-plate removed. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1, taken on the line shown.
There is a casing 1, having a central longitudinal slot 2 and bosses 3 and 4, in which are mounted the ratchet disks or wheels 5 6 and 7 8, The teeth of each ratchet-disk are formed on a flanged portion 9 thereof, and the head of each disk projects beyond the casing and is provided with thumb-notches I 10 to enable the disks to be readily revolved. The lower disks 6 8 are supported in the oasing by their flanged portions 9, which rest on flanges 11, formed within the bosses 3 and 4.
superimposed on the lower disks 6 8, and they are retained in position by the coverplate 12, which has openings at its ends fitting over the heads oi the disks and is suitably secured to the casing 1 by screws 13 or the like.
The ratchet-disks 5 6 correspond, as do the ratchet-disks 7 8, and the opening in each disk, which is preferably square, is made to one side of the disk.
A pawl 14, fitted in the slot 2, engages the teeth of the two disks 5 6, and another similar pawl 15 engages the teeth of the disks 7 8. A strong spring 16, lying in the slot 2 between the pawls, keeps them in engagement with the teeth of the disks.
In the drawings the disks 7 8 are shown with their openings coinciding, inwhichposition they will fit the largest size nut which this end of the wrench is capable of taking. The disks 5 6, mounted in the other end of the handle, are shown with the upper disk 5 partially revolved, so as to cover part of the opening of the lower disk 6 and adjust the disks 5 6 to one of the several positions previously mentioned.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
ing superimposed ratchet-disks provided with an opening and independently revoluble, each opening being situated to one side of its disk substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my I hand in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE SEATOR STEVENSON. l/Vitnesses:
A. J. PARK, J. R. PARK.
