Be it known that we, ROBERT M. CLARK, residing at Newton, in the county of Middlesex and. State of Massachusetts, and JOHN G.

BENNETT, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, citi- Zens of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Protectors for Igniting Material in SignaLTorches, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to improvements in protectors for igniting material in signaltorches.

The object of our invention is to provide a protector for the complementary material carried by the end of the torch-covering to prevent the same from wearing off and also from becoming damp and destroying the properties of said material.

Our invention consists in a torch of any description which carries igniting material on its outer end for the purpose of lighting the torch and having a protector thereon for the purpose of protecting the said igniting material from moisture. In devices of this character the end of the covering carries a complementary material adapted to ignite the material carried by the torch, and in order to protect said material carried by the cap we 0 provide a cover for said material which is readily applied and which is simple, cheap, and more eifective than those heretofore made and one in which said protector is readily removed without injuring the comple- 3 5 mentary material.

The-outer end b of the cap B is 'JI'O- vided with a complementary materia 1), adapted to ignite the material carried by the end of the torch and when it is desired to ignite the torch t e cover is removed and the end carrying the complementary material is rubbed across the igniting material. In order to protect the complementary material from exposure to moisture, and thus destroying the properties of said complementary material, we provide a rounded member C, which is just the size of the end of the cap and rests loosely thereon, and said member is provided with an elongated downwardlyextending member c, which is bent down along the side of the ca B in a manner clearly shown in Fig. 1. n order to firmly hold the said member (7 on the end of the cover, and thus erfectly seal the end of the cover, we provid ia a wrapper or protector D, which is preferably oblong in shape and which is wrapped around the side of the cover and the downwardly-eXtending tongue and cemented, and thus holds the tongue 0 in its downward position, the said tongue being of a length to extend considerably below the wrapper or protector D, thus leaving a portion a for grasping the same, the pur pose of which will be more fully hereinafter described. The upper end (1 of said wrapper or protector extends considerably above the upper end of the cover and is folded down upon the disk-shaped member C and cement-. ed thereto at d, thus completely closing the end of the cover and making a more perfect protector for the com 'ilementary material.

When it is desired to use the torch, the cap B is removed therefrom, and by taking hold of the lower end 0 of the downwardly-extending tongueC andpulling it, it will be seen that the wrapper or protector is torn on the sides, and as the tongue is continued to be pulled the disk C, carried by the tongue, is torn a :1 .cacrying with it the upper end (I. of the wrapper or protector which is cemented thereto. thus leaving the whole upper end carrying the complementarymaterial exposed, so that it maybe used to ignite the igniting material carried by the torch. The colnplementary material bpractically covers the outer end of the cap, and in order to insure of the removal of all of the wrapper above the material we make the to e of a width practically covering the comp omen tary material. The wrapper being of paper and cemented to both the cap and the tape, it will be seen that by pulling the tapcit posi tively removes all of the wrap ,er above the complementary material, so tiat it can be readily brought in contact with the igniting material of the torch.
