Description

WN @S Egg A. L
amasser All/LOS FASfSETI-T, lOF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
l Lettere Patent No. 83,614Ldated November 3, 1868; autedated IOctober 17, 1868.
L Ill/[PROVEMENT IN WAG-ON-STKE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of theaame.
To all whom. 'it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AMos FAssET'r, of Sterling, in, the county of Whitesides, and State of Illinois, have invented a new andl useful Improved Wagon-Stake; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is afull, clear, and exact descriptionl of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which 'form part of this specification.
My said invention consists in a novel nio'de of constructing wagon-stakes, whereby I am enabled to make removable metallic stakes, light, strong, durable, and cheap, said stakes being formed of three thin plates or pieces of iron or other metal, all arranged and secured together, and to the wagon-bolster or its equivalent, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
To enableA those skilled in the art to understand how to constructand use my said improved wagon-stake, I
will now describe' the same in detail, making reference,
l in so doing, to the aforesaid drawings, in which- Figure l represents a side Viewof said invention;
Figure 2, an end view thereof; p
Figureds a cross-section taken at the vertical line xiniigl, y .lv
Figure 4 is a horizontal cross-section Aat the line y in iig. l; and wi Figure 5 is a detached view of that part of the central plate which passes through the bolster.
Similar letters' of reference in the several figures denote the same parts of my invention.
A represents the bolster, upon the end of which the stake is secured, consisting of the central plate B and the side plates or braces C and D.
Upon 'one or both edges mof the central plate, a flange, b, is cast or formed, thus giving the thin plate the requisiteamount of strength laterally, its width from edge to edge affording4 the required strength in that direction. Upon thetop this plate is formed hollow, as indicated in iig. 3, said portion so made being marked B', and is providedwith slots q, wherein pins or keysv may be inserted, to secure a wooden or other prolongation of thev stake. A flange, b', is formed around said plate B, as shown, which flange rests upon the top of the bolster, that part below said flange passing through a suitable morise or slot in the bolster, the two edges of the plate, or that part below the auge b', being formed thicker thairthe body of the plate, and terminate in a screw projecting below the plate, as shown in iig. 5, and marked e e in tle said drawings. By this arrangement the nuts n, turned upon said screws e e, eifectually secure the central stake or main plate to the bolster, the iiange b holding the'same rigidly in place. A Upon each side of the plate B are arranged the plates C D, being provided respectively with flanges c d, and lips l I, the former resting on the top of the bolster, and the latter pressing beneath it, as clearly seen in fig. 3, when the bolts h are passed through the whole device, and the nuts m rmly'screwed thereupon, thus holding the entire stake securely and rigidly to the bolster.
s 1), and a rivet, j', and the device is completed, rings yr being aliixed at or near the top, if desired.
Thus, by themode of construction, and the combinatioii herein described, a light, cheap, strong, and diufable stake is produced, which can readily be remoyed by taking out the bolts h and unserewing the nuts n, if desired. A
Having described the construction and operation oi' my said improvement, I will now specify what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
1.I claim the plate B, when provided with the flange b', and the `enlargements. e c, projecting below said plate, substantially inthe manner and for the purposes herein set forth'. V
2. In combination with the above, I claim the side specified.
AMOS FASSET'I.
Witnesses JUNIUs Roenes, R. CHAMPION.
The upper ends of said side plates l are then secured to the central plate by a bolt and nut,
plates C D, arranged and operating in the manner
