Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, HERBERT O. PHILLIPS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the town of Warwick, in the county of Kent and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Regulating the Electric Spark of Gasolene- Engines, of-which the following is a specification.
This invention is for use on that class of gasolene-engines having a make-and-break spark-plug, the device being mounted in the side of the en ine-cylinder and arranged to trip the latchever,,which is pivoted on the reciprocating bar of the eccentric-rod connection; and the object of the device is to permit of regulating the proper time in making the electric spark for firing to increase the power or slacken the speed of the engine, as may be desired.
The invention consists of the novel con- I struction, arran ement, and combination of parts as hereina ter described and claimed.

On the projecting portion of the cam-rod e is secured an index-pointert and sleeve 3', respectively, and which latter member acts as a handle to operate the device.
Each of the cam- surfaces 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 increase successively in distance from the axial centerof the cam, so that by rotating the rod e the cam causes the pin f to move in- 'wardly or outwardly of the block to the fixei position desired to operate in tripping thelatch-lever is either early or late to fire the electric spark.
In Fig. 2 I show the cam set to correspond to the lndexmark 3 in 1 and which registers the medium position for firing the spark. In Fig. 2 the surface 1 of the cam represents the slowest position for firing the spark. Thus as the cam is set in the 3 position, as shown in said figure,it indicates a quicker position for firing before the piston reaches the end of its upward stroke. v

These parts last described represent the common construction to operate in conjunction with the usual fixed bolt (not shown) for tripping the latch-lever 7c in making the spark.
Assuming that the eccentric (not shown) has nearly reached the upper end of its stroke, the vertical arm of the latch-lever 7r first contacts with and forces the collar q upwardly, thereby causing the spring pressed rocker-arm tto follow beneath and in contact with said collar, and at'the same time the inner rocker-arm 15 will have come in contact with the firing-pin a, and thus the electrodes come together and complete the circuit. scribed, as the eccentric continues to carry its bar m upward the remainder of its stroke,

From this description it will be understood that my device readily permits of raising or loweringthe contact-pin f to trip the latch-lever in making an early or late spark firing in explosive engineshaving a make-and} break spark-plug, according to the .power required of the engine.
