UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
GEO. WINTERS, OF PORTSMOUTH, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAILROAD-GAR COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,359, dated September 16, 1851.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WINTERS, of Portsmouth, Dauphin county, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement for Coupling and Disconnecting Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention is a useful improvement in the shape and construction of a car platform in combination with a jointed self acting pin and stationary pin, for coupling and disconnecting cars.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A the platform or commonly called car bumper, at each end of car, with a division forming an upper and lower flooring. The upper flooring having a square aperture B for the square part of the jointed pin O to rest in, and a round aperture D in which a stationary pin E is firmly fastened. The inner face of the upper flooring is beveled off from the square aperture B, so as to allow the jointed pin O room to operate. The lower flooring has a triangular shaped aperture F beveled off from the sides of the aperture to the inner face of the floorin for the lower part of the jointed pin O to operate in difierent directions; O, the ointed pin, operating as a self acting coupling and disconnecting pin with a square head at top, having a handle or lever G attached to the head. The pin is'made square from the head to the joint H; the lower part of the pin is rounding and is of length to suit the platform; I, the half coupling or forked tongue formed by a groove in front, and two oval apertures or eyes. By the eye J this half coupling is connected to one car while the center eye K receives the jointed pin O and thus connects the cars. I The forked ends of the coupling I pass on each side of the stationary pin E (which is permanently located behind the jointed pin O) which serves as a fulcrum for the forked ends to operate on, and whenever the front car is thrown off the track; the lower part of the ointed pin C is drawn to the side and immediately disconnects itself from the eye K of the half coupling I.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The shape and construction of the improved car platform in combination with the jointed self acting pin, stationary pin, and grooved half coupling, all as herein described, for the purpose of coupling and disconnecting cars.
GEORGE NVINTERS.
