SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 313,269, dated March 3, 1885.
Application filed January 7, 1885.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK RUssnLL WIL- KINS, of Lawrence, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Couplings, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure l is a plan View. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. Fig. 4 is a perspective View.
In my Patent N 0. 303,687, dated August 19, 1884, I have a coupling which is the same in principle as my present inventionthat is to say, it is a coupling consisting of three main parts-the coupling-hook, the guard, and the buffer or bunter; but in the coupling shown in that patent the bunter is upon one plate, and the hook and its guard and supports are upon a second plate.
My present invention is an improvement upon that described in my patent; and it consists in making the bunter, the guard, and the plates which support the hook integral with each other and with the main plate, thereby not only greatly decreasing the cost of manufacture, but also materially improving the coupling as to durability and strength.
In the drawings, A represents the main plate, and E the bunter projecting from its upper part substantially as in my patent above mentioned, except that the plate A is not boxshaped, and except, also, that the guard a is a part of the main plate A. The two. horizontal plates a and cf also project fromthe plate A and blend with the guard a, thereby serving to greatly strengthen the guard to, and also to receive and sustain between them the shank of the coupling-hook D. It is in the highest degree desirable that the hook D shall be firmly supported, and it will be seen that the horizontal plates a a when made integral with the main plate A, are admirably adapted for that purpose; and, moreover, these two plates not (No model.)
only greatly strengthen the guard a, but the 5 guard at and the main plate A, when integral with the plates a cf, also greatly strengthen these plates, this feature of my invention being a decided practical improvement in this class of couplings, as a coupling embodying my present invention is admirably adapted for the very rough usage to which it is necessarily subjected, and costs considerably less to manufacture than my former coupling.
The guard at and the bunter E are preferably connected by a web of metal, (L as shown, thereby causing each'to support the other and making each stronger than before.
The bunter may be as shown in my patent, or may have the plate a mounted upon it and backed up by a spring, as clearly shown in the drawings, and as will be clear to all skilled in the art without further description.
The hook D is substantially as shown in my patent. It is supported by the plates aa and by the pin d. The spring d forces it toward the guard! in the usual manner. To uncouple, it is pulled in a direction away from guard a by the lever d as will be clear without further description.
In most locomotive-tenders the plate A will fit when made flat on the side next the tender; but in others a shelf or flange is necessary, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1. In this case the tang of the hook D may extend as shown in dotted lines. These modifications do not relate to my present invention.
IVhat I claim as my invention is- In a car-coupling, the main plate A, having formed upon it the hunter E, the guard at, and the two plates a a supporting the hook D and its connecting-pin d, all substantially as set forth.
