UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JACOB B. MILLARD AND HARRY E. MILLARD, OF LEBANON, PENN- SYLVANIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed August 7,1906. Serial No. 329,557.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JACOB B. MILLARD and HARRY E. MILLARD, citizens of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cars for Hoisting Apparatus; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. Our invention relates, primarily, to hoistmg apparatus for loading cars or other receptacles, has especial reference to cars used for conveying material to be hoisted, and has for its object economy in construction and durability; and the invention consists in certain improvements in construction which will be fully disclosed in the following specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a bottom plan View of a car embodying our invention; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same and Fig. 3, a rear end elevation, partly in section.
Reference being had to the drawings and the designating characters thereon, the numeral 1 indicates the body of the car, which may be made of a continuous piece of sheet metal, open at its front end and provided with a closed rear end 2, which is secured to the body 1 by angle-irons 3 3 on the sides and 4 on the bottom. The car-body has a flat bottom 5, is bent concavo-convex at 6 between the flat bottom and the vertical portion 7 of the sides, and from the upper end of the vertical portion 7 the sides are flared or bent outward at 8 to increase the capacity of the car.
The body of the car is stiffened and strengthened by longitudinal concavo-convex reinforces 9, which cover the concavoconvex portions 6 and extend from a point in the rear of the hind wheels of the car to the front end thereof and are secured to the body by rivets 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
11 indicates the axles of the car, which are secured thereto by cast-iron axle-supports 12 12, having lugs 13, by which they are attached to the body, the axle resting between the vertical members of the support the axle, and with laterally-extending lugs 18 by which the castings are secured to the body by rivets 19. The space between the inner edges of the reinforces 9 over the axles is filled by a strip or filling-piece 20 and is secured to the axle by pins or studs 21.
22 indicates the draft-link. secured to the bottom of the car-body by a T-shaped bar 23, and on the end 2 of the car is a ring 24, by which the car is drawn by hand.
25 indicates the car-wheels, which may be of any approved form of construction.
The car thus constructed is durable, simple, and easily repaired, the longitudinal reinforces serving to stiffen the body and prevent spreading of the sides.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is A car for hoisting apparatus having a sheet-metal body open at one end and closed at the opposite end, and provided with concavo-convex portions on each side of the transverse center of the car, longitudinal concavo-convex reinforces secured to the body, axles secured to'the bottom of the car,
and body-supports secured to the body over I the concavo-convex portion and resting on the axles.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB B. MILLARD. HARRY E. MILLARD. Witnesses:
EUGENE E. Moran, DAWSON W. LIGHT.
