CHIMNEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 13, 1906.
Application filed June 14, 1906. Serial No. 321,593.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD T. KELTIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at J oliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimneys, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in the construction of smoke-stacks, chimneys, or other hollow columnar structures wherein it is important to provide against collapse, injury, or disintegration from any cause, also to avoid excessive expansion from heat either within or without the structure.
The especial object of the improvements which form the subject-matter of this application is to provide a structure of the class set forth which will be proof against the destructive effects of seismic disturbances. In carrying out this and general objects of utility I have produced a structure a section of which is shown in the accompanying drawings in the following views.
Figure l is a cross-sectional view through a chimney constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, of a portion of a chimney embodying my invention.
Referring to the details of the drawings, 3 represents a hollow (rectangular in cross-section) structure built up of concrete reinforced by round steel rods 4 or by angle-bars 5, or by both, if desired, said rods or bars being set vertically and embedded in the concrete, as shown.
The inner wall of the structure 3 is lined or faced with hollow rectangular metal boxes 8, formed with overlapping flanges 6 at their upper and lower edges, said flanges being secured together by rivets 7 or in any other suitable manner. These boxes extend throughout the height of the chimney and when coupled together form a rigid structure capable of standing alone or unsupported by the surrounding concrete walls.
' To protect the metal boxes from the effects of too great heat within the chimney, I line same with one or more courses of terra-cotta blocks 9, having the usual air -spaces 11 therein. Blocks of other heat-resisting material may be substituted for the terra-cotta, if desired. These blocks are laid in the usual manner and may be of any desired thickness, size, or shape.
Instead of making the structure rectangular in cross-section it may be cylindrical or any other suitable shape.
It will be apparent that a chimney constructed substantially as .described will be practically immune from the usual destructive efiects of seismic disturbances and will possess other advantages of strength and rigidity and be absolutely fireproof.
I claim- 1. A chimney composed of an outer wall of concrete reinforced by vertically-arranged metal rods, a metal lining for said wall and a facing for said metal lining consisting of blocks of fireproof material.
2. A chimney composed of an outer wall of concrete reinforced by vertically-arranged metal rods, a lining for said wall consisting of metal boxes rigidly secured together, and a facing for said boxes consisting of hollow terra-cotta blocks.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HOWARD T. KELTIE.
