Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS G. PORTMORE, of South Framingham, county of Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Tags, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing-like parts.

This invention relates to tags of the class having loops attached to them through which the tags are passed when attaching the tags to an object; and the object of my invention is to improve the construction of the same to the end that the tag having a loop made substantially as long as the tag may be passed through said loop to attach the tag to an obj ect without bending the tag. Tags of this description are quite generally used by jewelers and others on watches, and as hereto fore made the tag is bent when passing it through the loop to attach it to a watch, and without the exercise of extraordinary care the tag when thus bent is broken. If a very large loop is provided through which the tag may freely pass without bending it, the tag hangs down so low that it is objectionable, and the additional cost of the string is a substantial matter to the manufacturer. To overcome these objections and still use a short loopthat is to say, a loop no longer than the tagI have discovered that by forming a slot in the tag through Which the loop passes near the end thereof the tag may be slipped through the loop without bending it, the loop sliding along in the slot toward the inner end thereof as the tag is passed through it.

Figure 1 shows in plan view a tag embodying this invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the tag and loop in the position they will occupy with respect to each other when the tag is being passed through the loop.

a represents the tag, which may be of any size and shape, and b the loop. Near one end of the tag a slot a is formed, which extends lengthwise the tag. The loop bis made as long as the tag, or substantially so. It need not be made any longer, although it may be made shorter. The slot is made long enough to provide for the loop sliding along in a direction toward the inner end thereof when the tag is being passed through it in the act of attaching the tag to an object and to enable the tag to be passed through said loop without bending itas, for instance, the'distance from the inner end of the slot to the remote end of the tag should not be greater than the length of the loop. In attaching the tag to an object the loop is passed through the object and the tag is then passed through the loop, and while the tag is being passed through the loop said loop will slide along in the slot (1 t oward the inner end thereof, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A tag having a slot near one end extending lengthwise thereof, and a loop passed through said slot, made not substantially longer than the tag, and adapted to move along in the slot toward the inner end thereof as the tag is passed through it, the distance from the inner end of the slot to the remote end of the tag being not greater than the length of the loop, substantially as described.
