VAPORIZER OR CARBURETER- Specification of Letters Patent.

der of the engine; and the objects bf my improvement are, first, to provide regulatingshutters as a throttle; second, to afford facilities for furnishing a supply of auxiliary air in proportion to the opening of the shutter-throttle; third, to regulate to a certain' extent by means of the shutter-throttle the lift of the automatically-operated air-intake shutters at the bottom of the air-chamber of the vaporizer or carburetor. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, in which Figure 1 is a vertica section of the vaporizer 01. carbureter. Fig. 2 is a top view of the vaporizer orcarbureter with the cover of the float-cup removed and the vaporizingchamber removed at Z. Fig. 3 is a section fromX to X, Fig. 2, arranged so as to more fully show the construction. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through a continuation of the line X X, Fig. 2, looking to the left.v The arrows at the bottom show the air-inlets and the arrow at the top the gas-outlet to engine.

In ig. 1 Vis a float-cup for gasolene containing a float T, with ball-va ve near the top, of the usual construction. The gasolene enters the cup V at the point M and leaves at the points R R and asses through the pipe Y to the tube D, the ow of gasolene being controlled by the ball-valve A, seated in the support B. The adjustment of the ball-valve A is regulated by the thumb-nut I, in conjunction with slidingrods E and a rin H. (See Fig. 4.)
J and J are two semicircular shutters in the air-chamber K, one hinged on each side of the bottom. piece G and raised or lowered ,suction ofthe engine through the gas-outlet 0. (See Fig. 4.)
N and N are two portions of a hollow sphere forming .the shutter-throttle for "controlling the amount and quality of the gas sucked by the engine. They open in opposite directions, as shown by the arrows, and are arranged on a common axis and operated by and in conjunction with the lever P, gear L, crank g, gear Q, tension-spring h, and the stops f and f a a, are a number of auxiliary air-ports located so that the shutter-throttle N and N uncovers them fullywhen both N and N are fully open. The air-ports a a are covered or closed partly or fully when N and N are partly or fully-closed.
The two halves of the vaporizer or carbureter are bolted together at Z. (See Fig. 4.)

which arebolted together at Z. (See Fig.
4.) The shaft 6 has a tension spring at h. At the lower end of the lever P is rigidly attached to it a gear L, with a ri 'd shaft (1,
(see Fig. 3,) which passes throug the crank g of the shutter-throttle N. The shaft 1) b is a hollow one, through which passes the shaft '0 c, which is attached to the shutter-throttle One.
N at e and e. (See Figs. 2 and 3.) end of the shaft 0 is firmly attached to the gear Q, (see Figs. 1 and 3,) which meshes with the gear L. The movement of. the lever P in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, in connection with-the gear L and the tensionspring h, Fig. 2, turns the gear Q, which in turn moves the shutter-throttle N until it strikes the stop f. (See Fig. 1.) In this position the shutter-throttle N would be fully open and shutter-throttle N fully close The shutter-throttle N' now covers the airshutter J and intervenes between it and the suction of the engine through C. Therefore J is not raised by the suction of the engine to the same extent it'would be if the shutterthe supply of gas to the engine, the lever P is turned in the opposite direction to the arrow, which moves the gear Q, turning the, shutter-throttle N to its full closedposltion,

Therefore the air-shutter J is not raised by the suction from the engine to the same 8X1 tent, it would be if the shutter-throttle N was not covering it.
This vaporizer or carbureter can be made in several Ways; but I prefer to carry out this feature of my invention as shown in the drawings.
The arrangement of a float-cup V, with a float T, in connection with a vaporizer or carbureter forms no part of my invention.
That I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a vaporizer or carbureter, a shutterthrottle made of two portions of a hollow sphere; each of these portions turning in opposite directions on a common axis by means of gears, a crank, a lever, a tension-spring and stops arranged so that each portion may at times be moved separately, all substantially asset forth.
2. In a vaporizer or carbureter, a shutterthrottle made of two portions of a hollow sphere; each of these portions turning in opposite directions on a common axis by means of gears, a crank, a lever, a tension-spring and stops arranged so that each portion may at times be movedseparately and air-ports near the top of the mixing-chamber arranged so that they may be closed, partly uncovered and fully uncovered by the closing, partial opening and opening of the shutterthrottle, all substantially as set forth.
3. The combination in a vaporizer or carbureter of a shutter-throttle made of two pieces of a hollow sphere; each of these portions turning in opposite directions on 'a commonaxis by means of gears, a crank, a lever, a tension-spring and stops arranged so that each portion may at times be moved separately and air-ports near the top of the rnixing-chamber, arranged so that they may I of the ball regulated by'a thumb-nut in conjunction with sliding rods and a ring, all substantially as set forth.
