PATENTED JAN. '7, 1908.
A. A. LONGUEMARE. GARBURETER FOR BXPLOSIVE ENGINES.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 11, 1905.
ADELE AMELIE LONGUEMARE, or PARIS, FRANCE.
CARBURETER FOR EXPLOSIVE-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 7, 1908.
Application filed November 11. 1905- Serial No. 286378.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADELE AMELIE LONGUEMARE, a citizeness of the Republic of France, residing at Paris, in France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Carbureters for Explosion-Engines, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates to a carbureter in which additional introduction of a quantity of fresh air required for the proper formation of the explosive mixture is effected, for the initial formation of the mixture, by means of a valve surrounding in an annular manner, the ordinary air inlet nozzle, the lift of which valve for su lementary admission of air can be regulate by means of a stop operated as desired.
In the accompanying drawing ;Figure 1 is a vertical sectlon of a carbureter according to this invention, the regulating part of the supplementary air inlet valve being shown in the position correspondingto that of complete closing of the said valve. Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are sectional elevations of the valve with its regulating part in four principal positions: complete and maintamed closing (Fig. 2), automatic and regulated working (Fig. 3), complete automatic working (Fig. 4 full lines), complete maintained opening (Fig. 4 dotted).
According to this construction, the doubleconical choke tube a of well known construction, in the interior of which the combustible mixture is produced, is combined with a valve 1) surrounding in an annular manner the said choke tube a, so that it can slide with a slight amount of friction in the cylindrical body Z of the carbureter. In this construction the double-conical choke tube a is pro-' vided at its large lower base with a sleeve m surrounding the tubular body a of the atomizer pipe 7', and the said large base is provided with a series of holes 11 freely admitting into the interior of the choke tube a, air which penetrates into the carbureter through the bottom openings 0 made in its corresponding plate.
The seat surface of the additional valve b is constituted by the angle formed by a reduced cylindrical portion (7 with which it is provided in the center of its height. In the position of rest of the valve 1), the said angle rests against the outer circumference of the 5 double conical choke tube a along a circle situated near its large base.
The valve 1) is forced against its seat by the tension of a weak spring resting, on the one hand against the interior of the upper collar of the said valve, and, on the other hand,
against the bottom surface of the cover of the casing Z of the carbureter.
In the annular hollow space left between the two collars s of the valve 1), which is thus made into a piston of the carbureter, and at a point of the annulus or reduced portion (1, can swing an arm 8 secured to one of the ends of a pin f. The latter is mounted in a plug 19 screwed into the body 1 of the carbureter and carries at its outer end (relatively to the said carburetor), another arm g which can be operated by any suitable gear, so as to produce oscillation of the arm e, in order to vertical downward position (Figs. 1 and 2), the arm e rests with its end agamst the bottom collar .9 of the valve 1), so as to hold it applied against its seat h formaintaining it completely closed. The arm e placed obliquely as in Fig. 3, enables the valve 6 to bring it into any desired position. In its lift to a limited extent under the influence of a the suction, the result being regulation of the admission of additional air.
. The arm 6, placed horizontally as in Fig. 4, enables the valve 1) to act in an absolutely automatic manner under the 'action of the suction, from its closing up to its maximum openin Finally, the arm placed vertically upwar s, as shown dotted in Fig. 4, maintains the valve in its maximum opening po: sition. It will be seen from this arrangement that if the valve 1) is secured to its seat It by means of the arm e (Figs. 1 and 2) the reduction of pressure which takes place in the suction pipe 7c, is transmitted fully into.
the double conical choke tube a and acts with its full force on the fuel escaping from the nozzle 9', as well'as on the column of air entering through the openings 0 and '5, any other admisslon of additional air being precluded'.
If it is desired to obtain a weaker explosive mixture, without however altering the volby the space separating it at that moment from its seat. A
It must be pointed out that any additional air does not increase the supply of combustible liquid but on the contrary lessens the same since it diminishes the volume passing through the said choke tube.
In order to make the admission'of air perfectly automatic, it is sufficient, as already stated, to place the arm e horizontally as shown in full in Fig. 4.
What I claim as my invention and .desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a carbureter the combination of an atomizer for the fuel, a choke tube surrounding the atomizer said choke tube comprising the frusta of two hollow cones connected by their smaller ends, a valve sea t formed by the base of the lower frustum, a supplemental air valve adapted to fit the'valve seat on the choke tube, an inclosingcasing surrounding the air valve, a helical spring arranged between the top of the valve and the casing and adapted to press the valve upon its seat, said spring being capable of being overcome by a reduction of pressure within the casing, and means for controlling the movement of the valve substantially as set forth.
2. In a carbureter the combination of an atomizer for the fuel, a choke tube surrounding the atomizer said choke tube comprising the frusta of two hollow cones connected by their smaller ends, a valve seat formed by the base of the lower frustum, a supplemental air valve comprising a hollow piston having an annular internal projection said projection being adapted to fit the valve seat on the choke tube, an inclos'ing casing surrounding the air valve, a helical spring arranged between the top of the valve and the casing and adapted to press the valve upon its seat, said spring being capable of being overcome by a reduction of pressure within the casing and means for controlling the movement of the valve substantially as set forth. 1
3. In a carbureter the combination of an atomizer for the fuel, a choke tube surround ing the atomizer said choke tube comprising the frusta of two hollow cones connected by their smaller ends, a valve seat formed by the base of the lower frustum, a supplemental air valve comprising a hollow piston having a reduced cylindrical portion forming an external annular groove and an internal projection, said projection being adapted to 't the valve seat on the choke tube, an inclosing'casing surrounding the air valve, a
helical spring arranged between the top of the valve and the casing and adapted to press the valve upon its seat, said spring being capable of being overcome by a reduction of pressure within the casing, a stop-arm adapted to engage the external annular groove of the hollow piston forming the air valve, a pin carrying the said stop-arm, a bearing for the pin, and an operating arm on the outer end of the pin, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ADELE AMELIE LONGUEMARE.
