Description
JOHN C. RYAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.v
Specification i'orming part of Letters Patent No. 83,552, dat-ed October 27, 1868.
To allwhom' it may concern:
Be 1t known 4that I, J oHN C. RYAN, of Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State otIllinois,
have invented a new and Improved Water- Heating Apparatus 5 and I do hereby declare that the follo win g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this specification. l
The object of this invention is to .provide an apparatus for `heating `water and circulating the same, to obtain the greatest amountxof steam heat or hot water from the fire of an-ordinary stove.
It is designedfmore particularly for .shop
and household use, though it is equally'applicable in situations -Where it is desirable to economize fuel and utilize the heat of one stove for warming other parts of the building. lt `consists of a boiler containing water, and
.being provided with a coil of pipe, one end of which communicates with a tank or reservoir, and also with the bottom of the boiler, While the other end communicates with t-he boiler at sonic point below the general water-level of the saine. The coil is thus incominunication i with the boiler and wit-h the source 0f supply,
so thatI the level otl water lin the boiler can be maintained. The body otthe coil is located within an ordinary upright cylindrical stove. rIhe turns of' the coil pass around and against V the wall ot' the stove, and at that part usually ing it back to the eoil, and which, with other device-s, perfecting the whole, is duly set forth in the following. I S is the stove, and T and M the pipe and door of the same. rlhe coil B. is showlfby re- 4 movinga portion of the s'tovebelow the door.
C is the supply-pipe leading from the tank Q, and is provided with cocks, a cock or globeVV valve, y, for regulating the supply from the tank, Aand a cock or valve, a, for regulating the rapidity of the circulation, so that the water irl the boiler can be maintained at any desired temperature within ordinary limits.
The-short pipe `U connects thel pipe C wit-hA the bottom ofthe boiler, and allows the water to circulate from the boiler through the coil.
The boiler is supported by the base N and branched rods o o, or by other suit-able means, and is provided with gage-cooks l land a glass gage, J, connected with the top and bottom by pipes-K K,.all ot the usual construction.
The pipe E leads from the pipe D between lthe coil and boiler to the heater H, which may beplaced in'auy room or equivalent position as a warming apparatus. The pipe E is aises connected lwith the top of the boiler by two pipes, L and G.
The pipe I is provided with a cock or globe, valve, e, and the pipe G is similarly provided with a cock or valve, c, both of which are be tween the pipe E and the steam-space ot' the boiler. y The pipe E is likewise provided with a cock or valve, d, which is betweenjts june tion of the pipes L and G.
' A pipe, I, connects the heater II with the vpipe C near the coil Il, at which point is ncock, m. The cock h is for the purpose oi' drawing oli' the water from the coil and boiler when not required. l
The tank is supplied from the general watersource by a pipe, R, and the supply is regu lated .with the wellknown iloat-ball and cock, as shown atf.
1? is a safety-valve, weighted to any desired pressure. p
The operation of the apparatus is as follows The Water in the boiler, heilig' duly heated, supplies steam' tothe heater II, which is taken from the pipe Dthrough the pipe E, the valve d being setto regulate the quantity at will. The condensed steamfrom the heater is re-y turned to the coil by the pipe Land discharged therefrom by means ofthe cock h.. It' desired,l this cock maybe closed and the blow-ott' cock m opened, which will open communication from thepipe I tothe coil. The pipe L also admits steam to the heater H when less degree et' heat is required, in which case the safety- FFICE. g
valve weight will be adjusted to exert lighter pressure on its valve.
The pipe G relieves the water in the coil from any beek-pressure; Aand obvia'teslthe spluttering andsnapping noise in the boiler 'which would otherwise occur.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the pipes E D L C with the boiler A, stove S, and coil B, whereby the circulation of Water is effected, as above described, and' at the seme tune the steam 1s taken from the pipe D or vessel A and conveyed to the heater H, as herein set forth, for
J. WINSHIP, 0. H HoRToN.
