JAMES MQRAGSDALE, OF MCCOVYS STATION, INDIANA.
Lenersratmtlvo. 83,547, dated october 27, 186s.` V i' IMPROVE!) ROAD-GRADER.
The Schedule referred to `these Letters Patent a'nu making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, J AMES M. RAGsnALn, of Mc- Goys Station, in the county of Decatur, and in the State of Indiana, have inventedcert ain new and useful Improvements in Bond-Graders; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact 'description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference markedl thereon.
`In the annexed drawings, making part of this speciiication, 'A represents a frame, which is made in a durable manner, and provided with the two short axles B and B, one of which, B, revolves, while the other is stationary in this respect.
The axle B ishinged to the frame, near its centre, andthe outer end of said axle, upon which the wheel Y J is secured, is free, so that it can play vertically, when necessary. A lever, k, is connected at one end to the frame A, by meansof the uprights M, and is connected to the axle B by means of a standard, L. The object of Athis lever is to raise-.or lower that end of the frame next to the wheel J. Close to the wheel J, and to the under side of the frame A, is secured a plow, It, and consequently, when this end of the frame is raised or lowered, the plow is also, and its depth in the ground is thus regulated.` n
Standing vertically, and at the centre of the frame, is a shaft, C, which extends both below and above said frame. Upon .the upper end of this shaft is secured a gear-wheel, D, and upon the lower end is secured a large plate-wheel, E, the periphery of which reaches close to the plow R, so as to receive the earth upon it, Which the mould-board of the plow turns over. The wheel D gears into 'an idle-wheel, F, and 'also into a bevel-wheel, S. The bevel-wheel S- is secured upon the inner end of the-revolving axle B', and serves to communicate motion iroin the` driving-wheel I to the gear-wheel D.
'lhe idle-wheel F gears into a pinion, G, which is 4 secured to the upper end of ra .vertical shaft, G.
Upon the lower'end of the shaft G-, is secured a series of curved arms, H I-I. These arms play, when the shaftG revolves, immediately over the wheel E, so as to throw off the earth, which is received upon said wheel from the plow R;
In using this machine, when it is drawn forward, the plow loosens up the earth, and throws it upon the revolving plate-wheel E. This wheel carries it around, until it reaches the arms H H and these arms revolving, remove the earth from said wheel, and throw `it to one side of the machine.
Having thus fully'described my invention,
What I claim as new, and d'esire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the wheel E, plow R, and revolving arms H H, when connected with the frame A, and constructed and operating substantially as specified.
2.` The combination of the hinged axle B and lever Kfwith the iiame A, provided with the wheel E,'plow R, and arms H I-I, and connected to operate as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 16th day of March, 1868.
JAMES M. RAGSDALE.
