Description
-To all whomit concern:
Ginted tatee @wat mijn.
JOSEPH TRUMP, or SPRINGFIELD, oH'Io.
Leners Patent No. 101,947, daad April 12, 1870.
The Schedule refers-ed to in these Letters Patent and making part of the name.
Be it known that I, J o sEPH TRUMP, of Springfield, Clarke' county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cotton-seed Planters; and I hereby declare the following to be a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof to enable one skilled in the art t'o which my invention appertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making part of this speciiication.
wit:
First, revolving barrel-shaped hoppers for containing the seed, fitted with projecting bars for agitating the seed and preventing clogging.
Second, a stationary diaphragm attached to the frame of the machine and fitted with a revolving toothed picker for throwing out the seed.
Third, a' revolving case, which also forms the supporting wheel of the machine and runs in the furrow, the case being constructed in two parts, V-shaped on the periphery, and separated sufhciently to form a circular opening for the passage of the seed to the bottom of the furrow.A p
Fourth, a peculiar construction of coveringshare.
Fifth, a slide and hand-lever for regulating the delivery of the seed.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure lis an elevation of the machine, with the case on one side removed to exhibit the interior.
Figure 2 is an' axial section through the revolving hoppers and case.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the covering share.
Figures ltand 5 exhibit modifications in the construction of the revolving picker.l
Figure 6 is a detached perspective view of the valveslide and lever for regulating the delivery of the seed.
'A is thel beam of the machine, and 1S the handles.
The diaphragm C is attached to the beam in the manner shown, and carries the share I) for forming the furrow.
lhe diaphragm also connects to the. handles by means of stay E, and is provided with a journal-box, F, in which the shaft of the revolving hoppers andcase rotate.
The shaft G carries the barrel-shaped seed-hoppers H H', to which are attached the parts I I of the case, which forms the supporting-wheel of the machine, and serves to give motion to the revolving pickerJ for delivering the seed, which is journaled in the diaphragm 0,-and rotated by means of spur-wheels K onthe.
part I of the case, and pinion L on the picker-shaft. A
The parts I. I, when together, are Vshaped on the edge, and run in the furrow behind the share D, and are separated, as shown, to permit the passage of seed from the :hoppers to the furrow as it is thrown out by the picker J.
As this passage' is covered by the share D in front l and casesl I at the sides, the seed cannot be disturbed by wind, Src.
The hoppers H H are first supplied with seed, and,
if necessary, fertilizing material also, through the My invention consists of the following devices, to
openings 7L hf, which are then closed by sliding covers.
The hoppers are also fitted with bars M for agitating the seed.
An aperture, c, iscut through the diaphragm O for the delivery of the seed, andthis is governed by the sliding-valve N, which, by means of lever O and-handle P can be regulated so as to limit orl entirely stop the delivery of the seed.
The seed is thrownout by the projecting points on the picker J, and, if necessary to plant the seed' in bunches, the picker is constructed as shown in either fig. 4 or fig. 5.
The share which follows the machine is constructed with blades Q Q for closing up the furrow and blades R It for leveling off the ground.
This may be raised'entirely off the ground by means of string S, as it is made 4to swing on the shaft G.
By reason .of the shape of the hoppers H H and by action of the bars M the seed is constantly agitated and delivered to a position over the revolving picker, and clogging is also prevented.
I claim herein as new and of my invention- 1. The revolving barrel-shaped hoppers H H h it', fitted with bars or projections M, as and for the purpose described.
2. The stationarydiaphragm and revolving pick-, er J, operated as described and for the purpose set forth.
3. The revolving case I I', constructed and operating substantially in the manner and for the purpose set-forth.
4. The covering-shareQJ Q and R R'.in the described combination with shaft G.
5. The slide N operated as described, in combination with the revolving picker J.
In' testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
JOSEPH TRUMP. Witnesses FRANKMILLWARD,
J. L'. WARTMANN.
