WALTER D. JACKSON, OF ESCANABA, MICHIGAN.
TORPEDO-PLACER-.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1906.
Application filed August 24, 1906. Serial No. 331,854:-
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER D. J AOKSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Escanaba, in the county of Delta and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Torpedo-Placer, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for placing alarm-torpedoes on a railway-rail, the object being to provide a device for this purpose that will be simple in construction, inexpensive, and by means of which a person on the rear platform of a moving train may readily place a torpedo in position to be exploded by an approaching train, and thus give signal as to a train ahead.
I will describe a torpedo-placer embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a perspective view of a torpedo-placer embodying my invention.
The device comprises a handle 1, on which are attached fork members, each consisting of side portions 2, which are sufficiently s aced apart to straddle a rail, as clearly indicated in the drawing. By providing two fork members the placer may be used for two torpedoes, and the two forks are divergent from the handle, as clearly illustrated. The side portions of the fork members are provided near the ends With recesses 3 for receiving the spring-arms of torpedoes, as indicated by dotted lines in the drawing. Also extended from the handle between the forks is a tongue or plate 4, designed to engage upon the up or side of a torpedo to hold it in position w en the arms of the torpedoes are released from the forks.
In the operation a torpedo is to be engaged with a fork, so that a person on the rear platform of a train may move the same downward upon a rail with the arms of the torpedo on o posite sides of the rail. Then by slight y tilting the instrument the tongue or plate 4 by enga ing upon the upper side of the torpedo Wi 1 old it until the arms are released from the recesses 3. Then said arms by their resiliency Will spring into engagement with the top of the rail.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A torpedo-placer comprising a handle, a pair of forks attached to the end thereof, said forks being divergent from the handle outward, and each member of the forks being provided near the end at the outer side, with a recess, and a plate extended from the handle between the forks.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER D. JACKSON.
