ROD-COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 6, 1906.
Application filed June 29,1906. Serial No. 324,100.
annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, and to the letters of reference I marked thereon.
The present invention has reference to that class of rod-couplings in which the rod is formed in sections, such as a plunger-rod for wells or other similar rods; and the ob ject thereof is to (provide a coupling which will be simple an effective in its purpose, easily operated in coupling and uncoupling the rod-sections, and when coupled a perfectly secure means is obtained to hold the rod-sections together.
The invention consists in a rod-coupling constructed substantially as shown in the drawin s and hereinafter described and clairne Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of a rod-coupling constructed in accordance with m invention,- Fig. 2, a sect'ional elevation t ereof; Fig. 3, a horizontal section taken on line 3 3 of Fi 2.
In the accompanying drawings, A B r'e resent the two coupllng-sections, to which t e rods C D are respectively connected in any suitable manner found best adapted to the purpose. The section A is constructed with a socket-head E, which is formed with L- shaped slots F and holes a, withiwhich engage a suitable "rod or other implement while coupling'or uncoupling the rod-sections, and the hole bin the section B is to enable the rod section to be drawn by means of block-andtackle hooks. j The L-sha ed slots F are diametrically opposite eac other, and the coup'lin section B has a solid head G, adapte to enter thev socket-head E of the pivoted keeper I of L-shape form, the horizontal portion (1 of the keeper resting upon the upper side of the lock, and by elevating the pivoted keeper, as indicated in dotted lines of Fig. 2 of the drawings, the lock may be swung back to an upri ht osition, as shown in dotted lines, to ena le t e two sections to be uncoupled and separated.
In the position shown in full lines of Fig. 2 of the drawings the two sections A B are securely coupled, the keeper I holding the lock H in the vertical portion of the L-shaped slot F and preventin the coupling-section B from turning, and W en it is desired to uncouple the sections the keeper is raised to release the lock and allow it to be brought to an unlocking position, as previously stated.
The solid head G of the coupling-section B has lugs or projections e to engage the horizontal portion of the L-shaped slots F, said lugs or projections being on both sides of the solid head, and when the'latch deviceis released, as hereinbefore described, the socket-head F is turned around sufficiently to bring the lugs or projections on line with the vertical portions of the L-shaped slots, when the coupling-sections may be separated. r
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is' 1 1. A rod-coupling consisting of two coupling-sections, one of said sections having a socket-head and the other section having a head adapted to engage therewith, and a latch device for holding the two sections together, comprising a pivoted lock and a pivoted. L-shape keeper adapted to rest thereon to hold the lock in position, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A rod-coupling consisting of two coupling-sections, one of said sections having a socket-head with L-shaped slots, and the other sectionhaving a head adapted to fit the socket-head'and lugs or projections thereon to engage the slots, and a latch device comprising a pivoted lock and a pivoted keeper to hold the lock in position, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN MCKENZIE LYNN.
