Specification of Letters ls'aent. a imation filed'october 4,1913. seriammraaaca.
Patented June 23,1914.
To all whom it may concern Be it known -that.- I, FRANK Wmun, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Lake, in the county of Aurora, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow Cou- 4 plings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it app-ertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plow couplings and particularly to a coupling for connecting plows to a traction engine.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a coupling of the character named which is adapted to be operated to release position when a predetermined resistance is offered to the movement of the plow whereby the plow is disengaged from the traction engine and possible breakage of the plow obviated.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of con-- struction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure l is a side elevation showing the beam of a plow connected to a traction engine through the medium of the improved coupling;' Fig. 2, a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the parts of the coupling in the position they would occupy when same has been moved to release position as the result of excessive resistance" being ofiered to the progress of the plow connected thereto; Fig.
3, a longitudinal section through the con pling, and Fig. 4, a section on the line 4i of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing A indicates a fragment of a traction engine and if: the beam of a plow connected to the traction engine through the medium of the improved coupling. This beam B is provided with the usual clevis 10 carrying a connecting link 11.
The improved coupling is shown as coniprising a pair of spaced bars 12 and 13 connected together by a bolt 14 which is surrounded by a sleeve 15 disposed between said bars and serving to hold the latter spaced relation.
ing alined recesses 16 inclined with respect to the longitudinal axis of the bars and ex tending inwardly toward the opposite end of the coupling. Pivoted between the ends of the bars 12 and 13 ad acent the recesses 16 is a plate 17 adapted for movement to a position between the'bars as shown in Fig.
- 3. This plate 17 is provided adjacent its pivot with a recess 18 which when the plate 17 is disposed between the bars 12 and 13 has its inner end alined with the recesses 16 and its mouth disposed between the bars 12 and 13. To connect the plow beam B to the coupling the link 11 is inserted in the recess 18 and moved to the inner end of the latter The plate 17 is then moved to the position .shown in Fig. 3 when the link 11 will be locked against disengagement from both the recesses 16 and 18 by reason of the fact that in The barsLEZ and 13 are .provided adjacent one end with correspondthe mouth of the recess 18 is disposed be tween the bars 12 and 13. The plate 17 is provided adjacent its free end with a transverse opening 19 which is adapted to aline with openings 20 in the bars 12 and 13 respectively when said plate is disposed in the position shown in Fig. 3. In order to secure the plate 17 against pivotal movement when same is disposed in lockin position a breakable pin 21 is inserted t rough the openings 19 and 20. iecured tothe bars 12 and 13 at the end thereof remote from the pivot of the plate 17 rievis 22 which is connected to the traction engine A.
In the use of the coupling it will be apparent that should the plow associated with the beam B strike an obstruction such as a rock the resistance offered to the movement of the plow, if suiiiciently great, will cause sufficient strain to be exerted upon the breakable pin 21 to sever the latter when the plate 17 will swing to the position shown in Fig. 2 thereby releasing the plow from the traction engine and obviating the possibility of injuring the plow. It will of course be understood that the strength of the pin 21 is such that same. will be severed before a force of sufiicient strength to injure the plow has arisen.
What is claimed is A safety coupling for plows comprising a pair of spaced bars having inclined recesses adjacent one end thereof respectively, said recesses being disposed in alinement, a plate pivoted between said bars and provided with an inelined recess the inner end of which is .zzinpimi to alive with the inner ends of the m --1seg of the bars with the outer end disposed between said bars when the plate is moved entirely between the bars, a breakable pin inserted through the bars and the free end of the plate to hold the latter against pivotal movement in a position entirely he- I
