ADOLPH WILDE, 0F BELLILOWER, ILLINOIS.
'rna'c'ron COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 25, 1922.
Application filed April 1, 1922. Serial No. 548,779.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLPH WILDE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bell-- flower, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tractor Couplings, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to couplings es ecially adapted for connecting the share re easing rope of a plow to the rear portion of a tractor.
Briefly stated, an important object of this invention is to provide a coupling having simple means whereby the same permits the share lifting rope of a plow to be released when the frangible driving connection between the tractor and the plow is broken whereby to prevent the rope from being broken and also to prevent the shares of the plow from being withdrawn from the ground.
A further object isto provide a coupling device which may be conveniently applied to any tractor without altering the construction of the same. 1
A further object is to provide a coupling device which is durable in use, of highly simplified construction, and cheap to manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing}: 4 a Figure 1 is a side elevation of t e improved coupling in use.
Figure 2 1s a longitudinal sectional view through the coupling.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevation of the coupling.
In the drawing the numeral 5 generally designates a tractor of any desired type and which is provided with the usual drawbar cap 6 to which the draft pole 7 of the plow 8 is connected by means of a frangible pm 9. As is well'zknown, when the load exceeds a pre-determined point as the result of the shares 10 encountering an obstruction, suchas a rock or stump, the frangible pin 9 is broken whereby to release the plow from the tractor- However, when the frangible pin 9 is broken the share operating rope 12 is'u'nder ordinary circumstances caused to release the shares 10 and is in some cases broken so that a new rope must be supplied. In carrying out the invention the. same is provided with novel means whereby the rope '12 or other with each other while the rear portions-of the arms diverge and have connectlon with a'pair of rope engaging arms 25 by means of hinge pins 26. With reference to Figure 2, it will be seen that the arms 25 are horizontally hinged to the bracket 20 and have their intermediate portions formed with sockets 28 arranged in opposed relation. to each other for the reception of the knot 29 of the rope 12.
When the knot 29 is arranged in the opposed sockets 28 the rope 12 is detachably connected to the bracket and when the strain exceeds a pre-determined oint, the arms will be separated to permit 0 .the withdrawal of the knot 29. The portions of the arms 25 rearwardly of the sockets 28 flatly contact with the rope and thereby aid in holding the knot 29 in the sockets.
The arms 25 are urged toward each other by means of a pair of coil springs 30 mounted; on a bolt 31 passed throughopenings 32 in the arms and a nut 34 is threaded on the terminal portion of the bolt to secure the coil springs 30 of which there are two in position. It will be seen that the nut 34 may be adjusted .on the bolt 31 for regulating the tension of the coil springs 30. A spacing element inthe nature of a collar 36 is mounted on the bolt 31 and serves to maintain the arms 25 in spaced relation at all times.
As illustrated in Figure 2, the rear terminal portions of the arms 25 are flared outwardly as indicated at 40 so as to present a rounded surface to the rope.
In operationthe knot 29 is arranged in the opposed sockets 28 and the frangible pin 9 is employed to connect the drawbar 7 to the.
the tractor to beagain connected to the plow in a highly convenient and expeditious manner. p
I claim 1. A plow rope coupling device for tractors comprising a bracket, a pair of arms horizontally hinged to said bracket and having their intermediate portions formed with sockets adapted for the reception of the knot formed on one end of the plow rope, said arms being provided with aligned openings, a bolt. passed through said openings, coil springs mounted on said bolt on opposite sides of said arms and constituting a means to urge the arms together whereby to securely engage the knot on the rope, and. a nut threaded on said bolt and constituting a means whereby to regulate the tension of said springs.
2. A plow rope coupling device for tractors comprising a bracket, a pair of arms horizontally hinged to said bracket and having their intermediate portions formed with sockets adapted for the reception of the knot formed on one end of the plow rope, said arms being provided with aligned openings, a bolt passed through said openings, coil springs mounted on said bolt on opposite sides of said arms and constituting a means portions formed with sockets adapted for the reception of the knot formed on one end of the plow rope, a bolt passing through said second pair of arms, springs mounted on said bolt for urging said second pair of arms together, means mounted on said bolt for regulating the tension of said springs, and a spacing collar mounted on said bolt between said second pair of arms.
In testimony whereof, I have afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ADOLPH WILDE.
