'tgggg rmw CHARLES. DYER, OF COAL RUN, OHIO.
I Letters Patent N0.83,478, dated October 27, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT-IN COMBINED CORN-PLANTER AND CU'LTIVAIOR.
To all whom it concern Be it known that I, CHARLES Drnn, of Coal Run, in the county of Washington, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Corn-Planter and Culti- .-vator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification. I
This invention relates to a new and improvedcornplanter and cultivator, and it consists in a new and improved construction of parts, as hereinafter fully shown and described, whereby a very desirable ma chine. for the purpose specified is obtained.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is a side sectional view of my invention.
Figure 2, a plan sectional view of a portion of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. 7
A represents an axle, having a wheel, B, on each end of it, and O is a rectangular frame, attached to the axle.
On this frame 0 the drivers seat D is secured, and in front of said seat a seed-box, E, issecured upon the frame, the former extending the whole width of the latter.
In the bottom of the seed-box there is fitted, longitudinally, a reciprocating bar, F, having holes a made through it, by means of which seed is discharged from the seed-box into flexible tubes G, which conduct the seed into rigid tubes H, which are attached to standards I, having furrow-opening shares J secured to their lower ends.
The holes a in the bar F may have thimbles fitted in them for the purpose of increasing or diminishing their capacity, according to the amount of seed to be discharged at each dropping, and the bar F is operated by the driver or an attendant, through the media of alever, K, connected by arod, b, with a bent lever, L, attached to the under side of the seed-bod. particularly, fig. 2.)
The standards I are braced by rods J the front ends of which are connected, by joints 0, to the front cross-piece of the frame 0, and the rear ends connected, by joints (1, to the standards.
The two standards are connected by a rod, 0, which is connected, by links f, with cranks g, on a shaft, h, having a lever, K, at one end of it. By drawing back the lever K the furrow-openers may be raised out of the ground, when necessary.
To the lower part of the standards, seed-covercrs L are attached.
In using the device as a'cultivator, sharesM, attached to standards N, which are secured to rods 0, having their front ends connected by joints to the front cross-piece of the frame 0, are used. A greater or less number of these shares may be employed, as desired. 1
The machine is extremely simple and efficient, may be constructed at a very moderate cost, and manipulated with the greatestiacility.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The described arrangement of the flexible tubes G, rigid tubes H, standards I, furrow-shares J, seed-coverers L ,p'ivoted braces J standard N, shares M, pivoted brace O, connecting-rodf, crank-shaft by, and lever K as herein set forth for the purpose specified.
