IMPROVEMENT IN GORN-PLANTER."

no ALL WHOM IT MAY concerns;
Be it known that I, AARON ARMSTRONG, of Gillespie, in the county of Mucoupin, and State of Illinois,
have invented a new and improved Corn-Planter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, kc and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to a new and improved cornvplanter of that class which is mounted on wheels, and on which the driver rides.
The invention relates to a new and improved mode of raising the furrow-shares Out 0 an improved mechanism for operating the seed-distributing device.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings- Figure 1 is'a side sectional view of my invention, taken in the line a: :v, fig. 2. 1
Figure 2, a plan or top view of the same.
Figure 3, a transverse vertical section of the same, taken in the line'y y, fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the frame of the machine, which is supported, atits rear part, by two wheels, B B, thefront D is the draught-pole, which is secured, near its rear end, betwoentwo bars, E E, by a pin or bolt, (1. The rear end of the draught-pole is connected, by a pivot, b, with a lever, F, which extends back underneath the driver's seat G, so that it may be readily acted upon bythe feet of the driver; and, when said lever is depressed or forced down, the runners or furrow-openers C C, with the front part of frame A, will be raised, (as shown in red in fig. 1,) in consequence of the front end of the draught-pole being retained or held by the neck-yoke of the team.
By this arrangement, the runners or furrow-openers, the ground with the greatest facility.
On the frame A there are place both these'boxcs, over the bottoms thereof. v
This slide has two holes, 0 a, made through it at each end and these holes, owing to a reciprocating motion which is given the slide, are brought alternately in line with a hole, 0 in the bottom of each box, and underneath bars or cut-offs e, the seed in the holes a a being discharged when they come in line with the holes 01-. This mode, however, of discharging seed is old and well known, and does not require a minute description..
The slide II is operated, or has a reciprocating motion given it, by means of clever, I, which has its fulcrumpin, atf, on the frame A, said lever having a pin, g, passing vertically through it, which pin is fitted into'a groove, h, in the hub J of wheel 13, said grooved hub constituting a care, which gives a vibrating motion to the lever i.
At any time when it is desired to render the seed-distributing device inoperative, the rear partvof the lover I is raised by means of a lever, K, which has a pin, 1', projecting from it at right angles, said bar extending under the lever I. By simply raising the lever K, the pin 2' is made to press upward against the under side of luYOl' I, and raise it, so that the pin g of I will be out of the groove h of the cam, and, consequently, no motion whenever required, may be raised from the surface of communicated to the lover.
The roove 7t ma be curved so as to ive a reater or less number of vibrations to the lover I at each a i g 9- revolution of the cam, in order to drop the corn at a greater or less distance apart, as may be desired; and, by closing one of the holes, a or c, at the ends of the slide I'I thC'll'Oppll'lgS of seed will be din1inishod,'of course, one-half, and the hills consequently planted at double the distance apart.
Having this described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pate rit The foot-lever F, connected or applied to the draught-pole I), to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
I AARON ARMSTRONG.
