Beit known that I, FRANK M. RUTTEN, a citizen of the United States, residing `at Crary, in the county of Ramsey and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Yielding Olevises for Plows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved clevis for use in connection with plows and other implements; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described, and defined in the claims.
The improved device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters indicate like parts throughout the sevleral views.
Figure 1 1s a plan view showing my 1m proved clevis applied to a frame'of a plow. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken through the clevis on the line x2 x2 of Fig. 1, the parts being on a larger scale than Fig. 1 and some parts being left in full. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line ma 003 of Fig. 2 and Fig. 4 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1, but illustrating a slightly different application of the draft connection thereto.
The numeral 1 indicates the forward ends of a pair of plow-beams that are rigidly connected by a bracket 2 and to which bracket is rigidly secured a horizontally-disposed flanged bar 8, having perforations 4. The clevis is made up chiefly of a hollow springcasing 5, that is approximately rectangular in exterior cross-section, and a pair of quite heavy metallic straps 6, thatv embrace the opposite flat sides of said spring-box. At its open end the spring-box 5 has two of its side plates extended so as to form laterallyspaced hinge-lugs 7, that are perforated to pass a coupling-bolt 8. Each of the four sides of the spring-box 5 is formed with a long longitudinally-extended slot 9. A nutted bolt 10 is passed through seats in the rear ends of the two straps 6 and through one or the other pair of the oppositelydisposed slots 9. Within the spring-box 5 is a heavy coiled spring 11, that reacts against the closed "end of said box and against the bolt 10. This spring therefore tends to force the spring-box into a retracted position e straps 6, as shown in the drawzontal positions, as shown in Fig. 2, so that they will therebyl prevent the said bolts from Y being worked upward, except when the said lock-pieces are turned into vertical positions.
By means of the bolt 8 the lugs of the spring-box 5 may be directly coupled to the perforated flange 3 4 of the plow-frame. When the spring-box is thus coupled to said flange, the ,outer edge of the flange bears f against the rear edge of said box'at 5a and holds the said box so that it cannot4 move pivotally with respect to said flange.
By means of the bolt 12 the forward ends of the straps 6 may be pivotally coupled either to an equaliZing-beam 14 of a draftequalizer, as shown in Fig. 1, or to a sheave 15, as shown in Fig. 4. rlhe sheave 15 is intended for use in connectionwith a draftchain 16, to one end of which the equalizing-beam 14 of one two-horse evener is attached and to lthe other end of which an equalizing-beam of another two-horse evener (not shown) would be attached, thereby adapting the plow to be drawn by two teams hitched one ahead of the other.

'lhe straps 6 in both instances usually stand in'horizontal planes one over the other, and hence an adjustment of the spring-box 5 is required. rlhis may be quickly accomplished by the device vdescribed simply by removing the couplingbolt 10, then removing-the spring-casing 5 and giving the same one-fourth rotation and then replacing the same between the straps 6 and replacing the bolt 10 so that the parts are again connected substantially as shown in Fig. 2, but with the lugs 7 of said springbox turned into vertical planes. The clevis is then adapted for application to a plowframe or to a single plow-beam which has a vertically-extended perforated flange.
