PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT SHERMAN LEWIS, OF YELLVILLE, ARKANSAS.
NECK-YOKE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 742,042, dated October 20, 1903.
Application iiled August 5, 1903. Serial No. 168,360. (No model To fz/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that LALBERT SHERMAN LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, vresiding at Yellville, in the county of Marion and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in breast-yokes for Wagon or vehicle tongues;
and it has for its object to greatly lessen or View of the same.
Like numerals of reference designate -like parts in the different views of the drawings.
The numeral l designates a breast yoke or bar of ordinary length, having a pole-ring 2 secured centrally thereof by links 3, engaging eyebolts 4, seated in the bar 1 and passing through apertures in the plate 5, applied to the lower surface of said bar or yoke.
Levers 6, arranged in the same plane with said bar, are fulcrumed intermediately of their ends each, preferably, between plates or straps 7 at their outer ends, which extend beyond the ends of said bar, said plates being secured to the opposite front andrear surfaces of the last named. Said levers have their short arms extending below the plane of said yoke and their long arms extending above said plane, the latter arms terminating, preferably, in ring-like portions or eyes 6 for the convenient attachment thereto of the breast-straps. (Not shown.) Said levers are connected together by rods 8 8a, arranged oppositely to the front and rear surfaces of said yoke or bar, respectively, and extend in opposite diagonal directions to each other, their points of connection with said levers being effected above and below the pivots or fulwheel striking or contacting with an obstacle or dropping into a rut or hole in the road, thus reducing or lessening the transmission of such action to the necks of the horses or team.
In using my improved breast-yoke the ring 5s experienced in the event of a front vehicle 2 is slipped over the endv of the pole of the vehicle and the breaststraps (not shown) passed through eyes 6, their free ends being then secured to the harness in the usual manner.
I do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of my invention.
. Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A breast-yoke, embracing a bar, levers fnlcrumed, intermediately of their ends, upon the ends of said bar, and connecting-rods between said levers, to equalize the movement of said levers.
2.V A breast-yoke, embracing a bar provided with means for securing it to the pole of a vehicle, levers fulcrumed upon the ends of said bar, the longer arms of said levers extending above the plane of said bar and adapted to permit the attachment thereto of the breaststraps, and rods connecting said'levers upon opposite sides of their fulcrums, respectively.
3. A breast-yoke, embracing a bar, levers fulcrumed intermediately of their ends upon the ends of said bar, and rods connecting said levers upon opposite sides of their fulcrums, respectively, said levers terminating in eyes for the attachment thereto of the breaststraps.
In testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT SHERMAN LEWIS.
