Description

APPLIATIDN FILED MAY 29.1908- attain-9 Wi tn one;
lISO
. E X JONES, on ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
` cnuToH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 23, 1906.
Application filed May 29, 1906. lSerial No. 319,334.
To /ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, E X JONES, a citizen of the UnitedStates, residing atAtlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Orutches; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description o the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in crutches; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature comprising, essentially, a spring-actuated tip, which is securely held upon a metallic holder inserted within the end of the crutch.
The invention comprises various other details of construction and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the app ended claim.
I illustrate my.invention in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved crutch. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through one end of the crutch, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the spring-holding devlce.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A A designate the two bow portions of the crutch, which are fastened to the head B, which latter is concaved and has a suitable cushion D mounted therein. E designates an angled bar having two arms, which are apertured to receive the bolts F, and a central aperture adapted to receive a screw H, fitted in said head and pro# vided for the purpose of causing the bows to be rigidly held to said head. K designates a handle, which is mounted upon a rod N, passing through the two bows, and said handle v rod O mounted in a hole therein, in which the same is securely held, and the portion of the rod which projects below the end of the .crutch is somewhat enlarged and is provided with a series of threads Q, while the portion below said threads tapers gradually to its lower end. The upper ends of the threads terminate in a shoulder R, against which the bottom of the crutch is adapted to bear. S designates a coil-spring which is fitted over the enlarged portion of said rod, and the upper portion of said spring is adapted to engage theA threads of the rod, whereby the spring may be securely held thereto. J designates a foot, which may be of any material, preferably leather or any resilient material, and to which the lower end of the spring is fastened.
From the foregoing it will be noted that by the provision of a crutch made in accordance with my invention a simple and eflicient device is afforded whereby the shoe may be held flat upon the ground or other object even though the crutch is tilted at an i angle, thereby preventing slipping and affording means for taking up any jar coming upon the user while walking with the crutch. Owing to the brace mechanism connecting the bows at the head, the latter will be securely neld in place.
What I claim as new is- A crutch having bow portions with the head secured thereto, a rod mounted in a hole in the bottom of the crutch, a portion of said rod having threads formed in the oircumference, a coil-spring fitted over said threaded portion of the rod and a shoe fastened to said spring, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
y E X JONES. Witnesses:
L. I. WooLr,
SAMUEL FULTON.
